The Future of Affordable Wireless Internet Access

Internet access has been spreading just as rapidly as cell phone usage over the past decade. While wireless Internet was once a marvel, it is now considered a travesty to step onto a college campus or into a café without free Wi-Fi. Even that isn’t enough anymore. Phone and Internet providers around the country are producing an increasing amount of portable wireless devices and plans. In fact, the day is not too far off when Internet access at the palm of your hand will be as necessary and affordable as a cell phone. The most popular form of portable wireless seems to be the Apple iPhone. This allows customers to access the Internet through the 3G phone network. The development of the iPhone alone is proof of how affordable portable wireless is becoming. When the iPhone debuted in 2007, its 8GB model was priced at $599. Now the 8GB 3G iPhone model costs a mere $99. Of course, smart phones can only do so much, and students and business workers alike often require a laptop for their Internet browsing. That is where the Internet air card comes in. An Internet air card is a portable wireless device that allows your laptop to connect to the Internet from almost any given location. These range in size and quality, from 5GB USB sticks to the new Verizon MiFi 2200, which can share Wi-Fi with up to five devices. And for those who are frequently traveling, whether it is for business or pleasure, there are international wireless broadband plans. The extent of coverage under these plans depends on the provider, though they are generally more expensive or non-existent the further away from the United States you go. Many Internet air cards also come with international wireless capabilities. Another option for travelers is international broadband card rental. This is much like a phone card, except you rent a small data plan. This is perfect for people who don’t travel often but may be taking a short vacation. Indeed, instant access to wireless Internet is swiftly becoming a reality. While the quality to price ratio needs some adjusting, this is sure to balance itself out once the technology improves – which it is certain to do in the near future.
