Panasonic wasts you to experience a “world of TV viewing realism” with their TC-P50VT25 Viera 50 3D Plasma HDTV. Is this really the king of all the 3D TVs?

The TC-P50VT25 is one of Panasonic’s top-of-the-line 3D HDTVs. It provides 3D viewing by showing alternate images on-screen. Full HD (1920 x 1080) images are shown in alternating fashion at 60 frames per second (120 frames per second in total). Because more frames are shown per second, luminscence time was basically cut in half. However, to make up for it, Panasonic greatly increased the luminscence intensity, still resulting in clear and bright images.

Panasonic then used their Crosstalk Reduction Technology to reduce afterimage effects via their newly developed fast-decay R and G phosphors. The end result is not only clearer motion, but a much smoother picture.

To achieve the a 3D effect, you will need to wear Panasonic’s 3D eyewear (the TV comes with one pair, so if you’ll need more than that, be sure to budget for it). What happens in these glasses is that little shutters in each lens open and close in sync with the images shown on the screen. Your eyes then view the images in invidual, alternating fashion, and it translates into a 3D viewing effect.

This Viera 50 television also has many of the Viera features, including Infinite Black Panel Pro – Panasonic’s best Infinite Black Panel, yet. Here, they used new panels and better cell discharge (they reduced the electrical pre-charge in the viewing panel that caused greying) to improve how blacks, and other dark hues look. Now, contrast is much deeper, and darker colors look deep and bold in virtually any setting, regardless of how brightly lit an area is.

The display is also THX-certified, and if you wanted to view pictures taken on your HD camera, you can do so right on the screen via the Viera Image Viewer – just insert your SD card right into the slot on the TV. Viera Cast will give you access to several readily available internet apps including youtube, Picasa, Netflix, and Pandora internet radio. The TV has USB ports for keyboards and wireless LAN adaptors, and you can even make video calls using Skype directly from your TV (you will need a separate camera, though – one doesn’t come with the TV).

Viera Link will also let you control your surround sound, Blu-ray, camera, or any of a number of other audio or visual components in your entertainment system with just your Viera remote. So, if you don’t have them, budget to pick up as many HDMI cables as you’ll need for each component.

Customer reviews at Amazon.com and Panasonic’s website were overwhelmingly positive – most of which being a 4 out of 5 or higher.

The single most impressive thing customers liked was the picture quality. The better the media they used, the better the picture got. In other words, standard def programming still looked good, HD channels were great, 3D Blu-ray was the best – that sort of thing.

Numerous people made it a point to mention how great blacks looked on this TV, with one reviewer even saying that he went out of his way to find movies on Blu-ray that were darker in nature, just to see how the blacks looked.

Some people didn’t like the design of the TV, and a few folks mentioned that while the TV looked good out of the box, that calibrating it and tweaking settings made a marked improvement. One review suggested having the set professionally calibrated.

Several reviewers noted that this plasma out performed both LED and LCD TVs they’d owned in the past, and one reviewer from Amazon even went as far to say that he felt it “currently has the best 50″ picture on the market”.
