Weber Q200 Provides Excellent & Even Heat Distribution

REVIEW:
The Weber Q200 Gas Grill is true to the high quality standards that have become synonymous with the Weber brand. This is definitely not a cheap imported grill and will easily last 10 years with a bit of loving care. The Q200 has the same porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grate found on Weber’s full-sized gas grill (just smaller), start button ignition and a high quality regulator.

The grate weighs a good 25+ lbs and is serious professional quality. Another clever little feature is the fold away side trays that are extremely useful to rest your grill tools and accessories on. The grill is awesome for everyday cooking, picnics and the beach. The fold out plates are then especially worth their weight in gold since counter space at the beach is extremely limited. Just remember while the grill is portable it still weights in about 40 lbs thanks to the heavy but high quality grate. The grill can be carried by one person, but having someone give you a hand makes carrying it a whole lot easier and probably safer as well. The grate heats up fantastically and the heat is evenly distributed – no hot or cold spots. The medium gas setting is normally more than sufficient to cook with once the grill has been preheated. Preheat the grill for about 10 minutes and you’ll be ready to cook up a storm. There have however been some reviews stating that the grill can be ready in as short as 3 minutes if preheated at full blast. Either way, with 280 inches of real cooking space you are guaranteed a decent sized cooking surface with excellent heat distribution where you can cook just about anything.

The grill uses 14.1 or 16.4 oz LP cylinders (not included with grill) that will last for about +/-2 hours depending on factors such as the amount of food that you grill per session or the heat settings you use while grilling. The grill’s portability is however increased becuase of the small-ish LP cylinders. Just make sure to have a few spare cylinders lying around to avoid embarrassing moments. The cylinders are readily available from Walmart or most hardware stores. It’s probably worth purchasing a universal adapter for a 20lb tank if you grill on a very regular basis.

Cleaning the grill is not too difficult at all. Heat up your grill as hot as possible and it pretty much becomes self cleaning. Once cooled the grate can be scraped with a bronze-bristle brush. The grate can also be removed rather effortlessly in order to wash it with some mild dish washing liquid & hot water. These types of cleaning methods will however require the grill to be seasoned again. The drip pan is easily accessible at the bottom of the grill itself – where all the drippings collect.

Weber Q200 Limited Warranty:
Weber offer a limited warranty on different parts of the grill:
> 5 Years on the Aluminum Castings with 2 years on the paint (excluding fading or discoloration)
> 5 Years on the Thermoplastic Parts (excluding fading)
> 2 Years on all Remaining Parts

CONS:
Any product review unfortunately does have some cons and the Weber Q200 is no different. Less than 1/10 customers did not approve of the Q200 with complaints ranging from shipping damages to regulator issues. There has also been the odd complaint about the side shelves not being strong enough to hold heavy items like a plate of burgers. The answer to this complaint is that the side tables are there for accessories – like your grilling tools or another cold beer. Not for heavy-ish items like a plate of burgers. All these complaints are however few and far between and for every 1 poor review there are 9 good to great reviews. Weber customer service has received very high ratings for dealing with complaints, so just get in contact with them on the off chance of you experiencing any problems. Indirect cooking is unfortunately not possible with the Q200. The Weber Q300 or Q320 is what you’re looking for if you wish to do some indirect cooking with your grill.

ADVICE & TIPS:
(1) If you can afford the cart get one as it just makes life a whole lot easier.
(2) Heat up the grill for about 10 minutes with the lid closed before you start cooking. However shorter warm up periods will also do depending on what you’re cooking. Once sufficiently heated up, you can just drop the heat as required when you start grilling.
(3) Take a lighter with you if you plan to grill where there might be a bit of wind. The wind can sometimes play a bit of havoc with the electric starter. However once lit with the lighter you shouldn’t have any problems with the wind.
(4) Wash the protective wax coating off the grate with a bit of mild dish washing liquid before your first grill otherwise your food might taste a bit funny as a result of the coating (probably a good tip for any new grill).
(5) Seasoning the Q200 before you grill that first juicy steak is recommended and a good idea. A thin coat of solid vegetable shortening needs to be applied over the entire grate including the corners. Heat up the grill for 15 minutes before placing the grate inside the grill. While keeping the lid closed you turn the burners to Medium-Off-Medium. Heat up the grate for 1 to 1.5 hours and turn the burners off. Wait for the grill to cool before removing the grate. Seasoning is not a must, but recommended and will just provide even better performance.

CONCLUSION:
If you have a little bit of space and want a portable grill that can handle fair amounts of food then a Weber Grill Q200 is just what you are looking for. Even though a bit more expensive than the cheaper imports a Weber Grill is worth every penny. Overall performance from the Q200 is just as one would expect from a brand like Weber – Brilliant. It cooks just about anything on a grate that provides fantastic heat distribution and a respectable cooking area for a portable grill. 9/10 Customers who reviewed the Q200 grill absolutely love it.
