Is The Weber Q100 Gas Grill Too Small For A Portable Grill?
The Weber Q100 Gas Grill proves the age old saying that “Dynamite Comes in Small Packages”. The Q100 shouldn’t really be compared to bigger Weber Grills, but don’t be fooled though it cooks almost just as well. Not everyone needs a large grill and according to hundreds of customer reviews it’s actually the perfect size for a small portable grill. The Q100 Grill can easily cook for between 1-4 people depending on what feast you have planned. This little grill gets hot enough to cook almost just as well as the larger grills, but just in smaller quantities.
Who should buy a smallish grill like this? The answer is easy – all wannabe “chef’s” who are looking for a grill that is:
(a) Good value for money – Weber is synonymous with grilling and quality
(b) Reliable
(c) Portable
(d) Smaller but still Quality (perfect size for people who love to grill but live in apartments where space is limited)
The grill operates on 14.1 or 16.4 oz LP cylinders that will last for about +/-2 hours depending on the amount of food that you’re grilling as well as the heat settings (cylinders are not included with the grill). The small size of the cylinders does however increase portability. Just make sure to have a few spare cylinders lying around for emergencies – a half cooked chicken leg can seriously ruin your evening. The cylinders are available at most hardware stores or department stores like Walmart. The Weber Grill Q100 has many features and very few drawbacks. Let’s have a look at some of these features.
FEATURES:
– 189 Square Inches of Sizzling Cooking Area
– Stainless Steel Burner
– Push Button Ignition
– Porcelain-Enameled Cast Iron Cooking Grate
– 8500 BTU per Hour Input (What are BTU’s?)
– Cast Aluminum Lid and Body with Drip Ducts
– Glass Reinforced Nylon Frame
– Removable Drip Tray
– Large Heat-Resistant Lid Handle
– Weber Q Recipe Booklet
– Plenty of Accessories available to “beef up” your grill
– Limited Warranty
Weber Q100 Limited Warranty:
Weber offer a limited warranty on different parts of the grill:
> 5 Years on the Aluminum Castings with 2 years on the paint (excluding fading or discoloration)
> 5 Years on the Thermoplastic Parts (excluding fading)
> 2 Years on all Remaining Parts
CONS:
Smallish grill so you won’t be able to grill for a large number of people (however if you’re reading this review you’re not looking for that type of grill are you?). Indirect cooking is unfortunately not possible with the Q100 – the Weber Q300 & Q320 have indirect cooking as a feature.
ADVICE & TIPS:
1) Cleaning the grill is not too difficult at all. Heat up your grill as hot as possible and it turns into a “dishwasher” as well (becomes self cleaning). After the grate has cooled down it can be scraped with a bronze-bristle brush. Once cooled the grate can also easily be removed and cleaned with some mild dish washing liquid and hot soapy water. The grate will have to be seasoned again if cleaning methods like burn-off or soapy water are used.
2) Use a foil tray in the drip pan.
3) The propane cylinders are not very big, so it’s a good idea to have a couple of extra cylinders lying around for back up. They are however very easy to come by – check Walmart or most hardware stores. Alternatively you can also purchase an attachment that will allow you to connect to a traditional 20lb. LP tank.
4) Keep the burner ring free from grease otherwise it won’t light all the way around.
5) Preheat the grill with the lid closed for about 10 minutes before you start cooking.
6) Wash the protective wax coating off the grate with a bit of mild dish washing liquid before your first grill.
7) It’s recommended (and a good idea) to do some seasoning before your first BBQ. Apply a thin coat of solid vegetable shortening over the entire grate. Place the grate inside the grill once you have preheated the grill for 15 minutes. With the lid still closed you reduce the heat to Medium-Off-Medium. Allow grill to heat grate for 1 to 1.5 hours and turn the burners off. Wait for the grill to cool before removing the grate. Seasoning will ensure an even better performance from your grill, but is not compulsory.
CONCLUSION:
If you are looking for a reliable smaller type grill that packs a punch then this is your guy. When buying a Weber Q100 you can expect a grill that starts up easy and consistently, provides great heat distribution and cooks most meals as delicious as the larger grills would. It can be stored away easily or will fit perfectly on your patio. The Weber carts available as accessories give the grill a very pleasing visual appearance.
