How to Download Torrents from your Android Device to your PC

I LOVE FREE MEDIA! I’m sure you do too. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could download your favorite      content remotely from your Android phone straight to your home computer? This guide will show you    how to do exactly that.

For this guide were going to be using a couple different pieces of software, µTorrent, on the PC and an Android app called TransDroid. We’ll start with µTorrent, one of the most popular peer2peer file sharing platforms for Windows. TransDroid supports 1.8.x however, the 2.0 beta should work fine as well.

Wait! How is my cell phone going to be able to download torrents to my home computer? TransDroid accomplishes this by using the built in Web User Interface, allowing TransDroid to connect to your machine remotely, through this interface.

First head over to www.utorrent.com (no special character) to download and install the newest release. Its not going to make a difference whether you choose the standalone version or the web installer, you’re going to end up getting the same program. After its installed go ahead and start µTorrent, were going to setup the Web UI next.

To set up the Web UI, go to ‘Options’ –> ‘Preferences’ and click the ‘Web UI’ tab. Make sure the ‘Enable Web UI’ box is selected. Then create some user name and password. Make sure and select the ‘Alternative listening port’ check box too, and set it to port number 8080. Make sure you write down the password, user name, and port number, as we’ll need ‘em later to setup TransDroid

Next, lets make sure that the Web UI that we just setup works. Open up your web browser, and navigate to http://localhost:8080/gui, put in the user name and password that you created in the previous step. If your screen is blank or you’re getting a “The web page cannot be found” error, check the Web UI settings again.

NOTE: Make sure you leave the computer running µTorrent on and the application loaded, otherwise you wont be able to connect to it.

Now, we’re going to setup your computer to receive incoming traffic from your Android device over the internet from anywhere that you have cell phone service. We’ll need to open up the port that we’re directing traffic through, (8080) to your computer that’s running µTorrent. For that we’ll need to get your computers IP address.

To get this go to ‘Start’–> ‘Run’ in the text box type ‘CMD’, press ‘Enter’ a command terminal will open up and youll get a command prompt. Type in IPCONFIG, then press ‘Enter’ in the output you’ll find your IP address.

Now we need to set up your router, or ADSL modem. From the settings in your router or modem we’re going to set all external incoming traffic on port 8080 (which we set up earlier) to your computers IP address that we got from the previous step.

OK, the final thing were gonna do is setup TransDroid. First download & install TransDroid from the Android Market, then run the app. When you rrun it for the first time you will receive a message that says:”Please set up Server Configuration” so we’ll do just that!

Press your phones ‘Menu’ key, navigate to –>’Settings’, click —>’Add Server’ then add in all the settings, ‘Name’ is up to you, from the ‘Type’ menu is µTorrent. For your IP address you’ll need your EXTERNAL address which is different that the one we got earlier, the easiest way to get this is to open your browser and go to whatismyip.com.

Almost done! for the port use 8080, make sure you enable authentication, and for the username and password use the one we made at the beginning of this guide!

Now lets make sure it works! Turn off the WiFi on your Android phone  (we just configured it to work outside of your home network, so using it from within you network would require different settings.)

That’s it! select your server that you named and connect! I use this all the time with the Bar Code Scanner that you download in the market, go in to Walmart and start scanning DVD’s! By the time you get home, BAM! new movies to watch! (Ones that you already own, for backup reasons…….duh!)
