Voltarol (Diclofenac) SR 75 mg 28 Tabl.

Voltarol (Diclofenac) SR 75 mg 28 Tabl.

$20.75

Diclofenac contain the active ingredient diclofenac sodium, which is a type of medicine called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs are used to relieve pain and inflammation. (NB. Diclofenac is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.) Diclofenac works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase (COX). Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced by the body in response to injury and certain diseases and conditions, and cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Diclofenac blocks the production of these prostaglandins and is therefore effective at reducing inflammation and pain. Diclofenac is used to relieve pain and inflammation in a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including various forms of arthritis, gout, sprains, fractures, dislocations, back pain, tendinitis and frozen shoulder. It is also used to relieve pain and inflammation following dental, orthopaedic (bone) and other minor surgery. Defanac e/c tablets have a special ‘enteric coating’ that is designed to prevent the absorption of the diclofenac in the stomach, and thus reduce the risk of stomach irritation. The diclofenac is absorbed when the tablet reaches the intestine. The tablets should be swallowed whole to avoid damaging this coating. Defanac Retard tablets are sustained-release tablets. They contain a higher dose of diclofenac and are designed to release this slowly and continuously over a few hours. This provides more prolonged pain relief, so the tablets are taken less frequently. These tablets must also be swallowed whole to avoid damaging the sustained-release action. Both types of tablet should preferably be taken with food to help avoid irritating the stomach.

Norlevo (Levonelle) 1.5 mg 1 tabl.

Norlevo (Levonelle) 1.5 mg 1 tabl.

$12.95

Levonelle one step is commonly known as ‘the morning after pill’. It is used to reduce the chances of becoming pregnant after unprotected sexual intercourse. Levonelle one step tablets contain the active ingredient levonorgestrel, which is a synthetic derivative of the naturally occurring female sex hormone, progesterone. The whole process from fertilisation to implantation in the womb can take up to three days, so the morning after pill can only stop a pregnancy for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. The sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, the more effective it will be. There is one tablet to be taken. Previously, the morning after pill consisted of two tablets that had to be taken twelve hours apart. Studies have since shown these tablets were equally effective if they were taken together. Levonelle one step contains one double strength tablet. It has been phased in to replace the old Levonelle product that contained two tablets. With Levonelle one step there is no second tablet to remember to take twelve hours after the first. The new double strength tablet should be taken as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours, after unprotected sex. It is estimated that 85 per cent of pregnancies will be prevented if this morning-after pill is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. The tablet is more effective at preventing pregnancy the earlier it is taken, so it is important to take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex, rather than delay to the third day.

Zovirax tabletten 800 mg 35 Tabl.

Zovirax tabletten 800 mg 35 Tabl.

$166.75

Zovirax tablets and suspension contain the active ingredient aciclovir, which is an antiviral medicine used to treat infections with herpes viruses. (NB. Aciclovir tablets and dispersible tablets are also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.) The herpes viruses include the viruses that cause cold sores and genital herpes (herpes simplex 1 and 2) and the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles (varicella zoster or herpes varicellae). Aciclovir works by stopping these herpes viruses from reproducing and infecting more cells in the body. Aciclovir is converted to a more active form inside cells of the body that are infected with herpes viruses. The activated aciclovir then works by blocking the action of a viral enzyme called DNA polymerase. The herpes viruses need the DNA polymerase enzyme to copy their genetic material from RNA to DNA. This process is necessary for the viruses to multiply and continue to survive. By blocking the action of DNA polymerase, aciclovir prevents the herpes viruses from multiplying. This controls the infection and helps the immune system to deal with it. Aciclovir is taken by mouth to treat herpes infections that cause chickenpox and shingles. It is also taken by mouth to treat genital herpes and other herpes simplex infections of the skin and mucous membranes, and to prevent these infections coming back in people who suffer recurrent infections. Oral aciclovir is also valuable for preventing herpes simplex infections in people whose immune systems are supressed and cannot fight off infection, either due to disease, eg HIV and AIDS, or medical treatment, eg chemotherapy, steroids, bone marrow transplant. Aciclovir is also available as creams specifically for treating genital herpes and cold sores, and as an eye ointment for treating herpes simplex infections of the eye. See the factsheets linked below for further information about these preparations.

Microgynon 30 0.03 mg 6 x 21 Tabl.

Microgynon 30 0.03 mg 6 x 21 Tabl.

$29.9

Microgynon 30 tablets are a type of hormonal contraception commonly known as ‘the pill’ or combined oral contraceptive pill. Microgynon 30 tablets contain two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. These are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. Ethinylestradiol (previously spelt ethinyloestradiol in the UK) is a synthetic version of oestrogen and levonorgestrel is a synthetic form of progesterone. Combined oral contraceptives like Microgynon work by over-riding the normal menstrual cycle. In a woman’s normal menstrual cycle, levels of the sex hormones change throughout each month. The hormones cause an egg to be released from the ovaries (ovulation) and prepare the lining of the womb for a possible pregnancy. At the end of each cycle, if the egg has not been fertilised the levels of the hormones fall, causing the womb lining to be shed as a monthly period. The daily dose of hormones taken in the pill work mainly by tricking your body into thinking that ovulation has already happened. This prevents an egg from ripening and being released from the ovaries each month. The hormones also increase the thickness of the natural mucus at the neck of the womb, which makes it more difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb and reach an egg. They also change the quality of the womb lining (endometrium), making it less likely that a fertilised egg can implant there. Microgynon 30 is a monophasic pill. This means that each tablet has the same dose of hormones in it. One tablet is taken every day for 21 days and you then have a seven day break from pill-taking. During your seven day break, the levels of the hormones in your blood drop, which results in a withdrawal bleed that is similar to your normal period. You start the next pack after the seven pill-free days are up, even if you are still bleeding. The tablets come in a calender pack marked with days of the week to help you remember to take a pill every day for three weeks, followed by a week off. You will still be protected against pregnancy in your pill-free week, provided you took all the pills correctly, you start the next packet on time and nothing else happened that could make the pill less effective (eg sickness, diarrhoea, or taking certain other medicines – see below). The contraceptive pill results in lighter, less painful and more regular menstrual bleeding. This means it is sometimes prescribed for women who have problems with particularly heavy, painful or irregular periods.

Marvelon tablets are a type of hormonal contraception commonly known as ‘the pill’ or combined oral contraceptive pill. This means it is sometimes also prescribed for women who have problems with particularly heavy, painful or irregular periods.

Microgynon 30 ED 0.03 mg 3 x 28 Tabl.

Microgynon 30 ED 0.03 mg 3 x 28 Tabl.

$15.75

What is Champix? Champix tablets contain the active ingredient varenicline, which is a medicine used to help people who are addicted to nicotine to give up smoking. It acts in the brain, but is not the same as nicotine replacement therapy. Champix (varenicline) is a type of medicine called a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist. This means that it acts on the same receptors in the brain as nicotine does. How does Champix work? Champix works by stimulating the nicotinic receptors in the brain. This produces an effect that relieves the craving and withdrawal symptoms you can get when you stop smoking. At the same time, varenicline blocks nicotine from acting on the receptors. This prevents any nicotine inhaled in tobacco smoke from having a rewarding and enjoyable effect. However, it is recommended that you don’t smoke while you are taking this medicine. You should seek help and support as much as possible while giving up smoking, even while taking this medicine, as this will increase your chance of success. Your doctor, practice nurse or local pharmacist can all provide this support. You should start taking this medicine while you are still smoking and set a ‘target stop date’ for within the first two weeks of treatment. This is because the medicine needs time to start working. The dose is increased gradually in the first week of treatment and the medicine is then taken twice a day for 12 weeks. If you have successfully managed to stop smoking at the end of 12 weeks, your doctor may offer you a further 12 week course of treatment. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. They can be taken with or without food.
