Max Weber’s View of Bureaucracy Essay

Sample Essay

Words 1,857

As denizens of the 21st century most of us have are not overly fond of bureaucracy. But this is in large measure because it is difficult for us to imagine a world without it. While bureaucracy certainly has its drawbacks, it also provides a rational framework through with to accomplish work. Bureaucracies are not perfect, but they are essentially rational – unlike the methods of organizing work that came before them, which is the reason that the German sociologist Max Weber championed them. This paper examines his views on the importance of bureaucracy within the larger framework of his views on the ways in which societies are structured.

Weber’s contributions were wide-ranging, as this summary of his work suggests:

He opposed the orthodox Marxian view of the time that economics was the preeminent determining factor in social causation and instead stressed the plurality and interdependence of causes. Weber emphasized the role of religious values, ideologies, and charismatic leaders in shaping societies. In his Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (1920, tr. 1930) he developed a thesis concerning the intimate connection between the ascetic ideal fostered by Calvinism and the rise of capitalist institutions. A keen observer of politics in his own time, he first admired, then repudiated Otto von Bismarck, and he later advocated for Germany a democratic form of government somewhat on the American model.[1]

For the first time in 70 years, a new translation of Max Weber’s classic The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism–one of the most enduring and influential books in sociology–is available. Translator Stephen Kalberg is an internationally acclaimed Weberian scholar. In this Third Edition, Kalberg offers a precise and nuanced rendering of The Protestant Ethic that captures Weber’s style as well as the unusual subtlety of his descriptions and causal arguments. Kalberg’s standardization of Weber’s terminology facilitates understanding of the various twists and turns in his complex lines of reasoning. Weber’s original italicization, highlighting major themes, has been restored. A glossary of major terms has been added. In short, The Protestant Ethic thesis is presented in a clear and highly readable manner. There are three compelling reasons to read this classic: * It explores the continuing debate regarding the origins and legacy of modern capitalism in the West. * It helps the reader better understand economic development today around the world, especially in Russia, Eastern Europe, Asia, and South America. * It plumbs the deep cultural forces that affect contemporary work life and the workplace in the United States and Europe. In his introduction, Kalberg examines the controversy that has surrounded this book for nearly a century and summarizes major aspects of Weber’s complex analysis. Kalberg also discusses The Protestant Ethic in the context of Weber’s other writings. Finally, Kalberg investigates the contribution of this classical study for understanding the role played by cultural forces in modern economic development and discusses the wide-ranging impact today of ascetic Protestantism on the American work ethic. The Third Roxbury Edition includes Weber’s 1906 essay The Protestant Sects and the Spirit of Capitalism. Written after his extensive travels in the United States in 1904, Weber comments here on the diverse ways in which the legacies of early American Protestantism remain influential. Also included in this edition are Weber’s masterful prefatory remarks to his Collected Essays in the Sociology of Religion, in which he defines the uniqueness of Western Societies and asks what ideas and interests combined to call forth modern Western rationalism. For students, The Protestant Ethic is a starting point toward understanding the multiple dimensions of social change. The continuing debates about the main elements of modern life–capitalism, our common sense economic determinism and rational choices, relationships between cultural forces and social structures, the tension between religion and science, the cultural foundations of democracy, economic cultures and business ethics, and the future of modern capitalism–are very much part of the Weberian project. Small wonder, then, that The Protestant Ethic continues to be one of the most frequently assigned readings in sociology.

This brilliant study opposes the Marxist concept of dialectical materialism and its view that change takes place through the conflict of opposites. Instead, Weber relates the rise of a capitalist economy to the Puritan determination to work out anxiety over salvation or damnation by performing good deeds — an effort that ultimately encouraged capitalism.

Weber’s texts present wide-ranging discussions on the Western city, state, forms of rulership and law, and modes of economic innovation. Moreover, in many selections Weber offers in-depth and insightful comparisons to China and India. Readings on the economic ethics of Confucianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Catholicism further illuminate the distinct qualities of the West’s trajectory and its diverse causes. A separate section examines the long-range influence of the ascetic Protestant sects and churches on American society. To draw readers into the material, this engaging volume includes extended introductions by the editor, many new translations, a chronology of Weber’s life, an expanded glossary and bibliography, and numerous clarifying endnotes. As such it deserves to be offered to twentieth-century readers in the most accurate form possible, and so it is, in this Norton Critical Edition, the first text to be edited directly from the manuscripts, rather than perpetuating the errors of previous editions. The text is fully annotated, and the reading is assisted by helpful footnotes, biographical sketches, and two maps.In “Backgrounds”, the editors collect Franklin’s most important reflections on the Autobiography’s purpose, some anecdotes, and a number of Franklin’s statements on wealth, the art of virtue, and perfection. Materials in “Criticism” range from contemporary opinions—which reveal that readers were divided then as they are now about the art of the Autobiography—to essays written in the twentieth century.Nineteenth-century opinions include those of John Keats, Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, and William Dean Howells, among others. The twentieth-century materials include D. H. Lawrence’s celebrated essay, an excerpt from Max Weber’s Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, and the perspectives of such recent critics as Charles L.Sanford, Robert Freeman Sayre, John William Ward, and David Devin.

 Classical Sociological Theory

Classical Sociological Theory

$73.8

Over the years, many textbooks have been written about the troika of sociological geniuses, Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. Too often, however, these works have been mere distillations of the views of the great thinkers. They did not intend nor could they hope to capture the subtleties and nuances of the original texts. With the publication of Ian McIntosh’s Classical Sociological Theory: A Reader, extracts of the most relevant and noteworthy works of the classical sociological thinkers are available for the first time in a single volume. Here we find lengthy excerpts from Marx’s Communist Manifesto and The German Ideology, Weber’s Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, Durkheim’s The Division of Labour in Society and Suicide: A Study in Sociology. Generous portions of fifteen other texts are included here, as well as selected correspondence of Karl Marx. Each extract is prefaced by an introduction which provides the reader with essential background information on each author’s Weltanschauung, without telling the student what to think or encapsulating the excerpt to follow. Brief biographies of the principals and guides for further reading provide the student with a frame of reference for the texts. Classical Sociological Theory: A Reader is not a replacement for the full texts in the original. It is, however, an enticement, whetting the appetite for further exploration of the masters of sociological thought.

Auszug: Bettina von Arnim (the Countess of Arnim) (4 April 1785, Frankfurt am Main – 20 January 1859, Berlin), born Elisabeth Catharina Ludovica Magdalena Brentano, was a German writer and novelist. Bettina (as well: Bettine) Brentano was a writer, publisher, composer, singer, visual artist, an illustrator, patron of young talent and a social activist. She was the archetype of the Romantic era’s zeitgeist, and the crux of many creative relationships of canonical artistic figures. Bettina is best known for the company she kept. She claimed deep friendships with Goethe, Beethoven, and Pückler and tried to foster an artistic union between them. Many leading composers of the time, such as Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johanna Kinkel, and Johannes Brahms, admired her for her spirit and her talents. Considering the Great Commission: Evangelism and Mission in the Wesleyan Spirit

Considering the Great Commission: Evangelism and Mission in the Wesleyan Spirit

$37

A comprehensive guide to the theology and practice of evangelism within the Wesleyan tradition. No one would deny that evangelism stands at the heart of the Wesleyan/Methodist movement. Yet ask any number of representatives of that movement what evangelism means, and you will get an equal number of definitions. Is it bringing the lost to saving faith in Christ? Working to conform the social order to the Kingdom of God? Deepening the commitment of disciples to the work the Gospel? This important new volume answers that evangelism is all these, and more. Drawing on the work of prominent theologians and church leaders, it examines both the theory and the practice of evangelism among the people called Methodist, charting a course for a faithfully Wesleyan fulfillment of the Great Commission.

Covenants without Swords: Idealist Liberalism and the Spirit of Empire

$57.5

“Covenants without Swords is a persuasive and elegant examination of the neglected current of liberalism as it relates to the possibilities of reform on the international scene. It will occasion a reassessment of what we thought we already knew about ‘interwar idealists’ and may inspire deeper thought about the resources modern liberalism can bring to bear on the possibility of order in the semi-anarchic milieu of the post-Cold War international system.”–Michael J. Smith, University of Virginia, author of Realist Thought from Weber to Kissinger

Democracy and the Political in Max Weber's Thought

Democracy and the Political in Max Weber’s Thought

$36.76

Max Weber is best known as one of the founders of modern sociology and the author of the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, but he also made important contributions to modern political and democratic theory. In Democracy and the Political in Max Weber’s Thought, Terry Maley explores, through a detailed analysis of Weber’s writings, the intersection of recent work on Weber and on democratic theory, bridging the gap between these two rapidly expanding areas of scholarship.Maley critically examines how Weber’s realist ‘model’ of democracy defines and constrains the possibilities for democratic agency in modern liberal-democracies. Maley also looks at how ideas of historical time and memory are constructed in his writings on religion, bureaucracy, and the social sciences. Democracy and the Political in Max Weber’s Thought is both an accessible introduction to Weber’s political thought and a spirited defense of its continued relevance to debates on democracy.

The Collapse Of Eclecticism. The impression left by French philosophy is one of a much greater richness and variety as compared with German. Although it only now and then, in some culminating point, actually attains a higher level, yet where it develops the same favourite theme—the immediate life of the spirit—it carries into its inquiry a much greater vitality and exuberance, and so lively a sense of concrete reality that the life of the senses is transfigured

 Habermas And Contemporary Society

Habermas And Contemporary Society

$116

By marginalizing methodological and other more specialized theoretical concerns, this book focuses on Habermas’s substantive portrayal of contemporary society and its discontents. Over the last four decades Jürgen Habermas has forged an innovative and much-discussed theory of contemporary capitalist society. Building on Max Weber’s thesis that the dynamic of capitalism actually erodes individual freedom and the meaningfulness of social life—famously resulting in a culture of “specialists without spirit, sensualists without heart”—Habermas traces contemporary social conflict to resistance to this dynamic by a variety of social groups. His theory of “communicative action” attempts to show the possibilities in contemporary society for moving toward a more balanced social life that, unlike other political currents today, would not sacrifice the truly progressive features of complex modern societies.
