Advice on what TV to buy?

I am looking at buying a TV between 40 and 50″. Don’t know which is better, Samsung or Sony (the two brands I’m looking at), and I want a great lifelike picture with great sound. Not bothered about 3D, but wouldn’t mind the internet TV. Also which is better – LED, LCD OR PLASMA and why?
Oh and its got to have built in HD.
