In today’s modern world, things happen at incredible speeds.  People are constantly connected – constantly online – and multi-tasking like never before. They are drinking coffee, shooting off tons of emails and scanning the RSS fed headlines of the top world’s newspapers, which are updated, streamed and delivered to their WiMax compatible laptops in up-to-the-minute real time.

About 20 years ago, a full day of errands would include a trip to the grocery store, a trip to the bank and a good hour spent in line at the post office, sending that birthday present to your nephew a few states away.  Now, a full day of errands is jam-packed, bursting with things to do, people to see and future meetings to arrange.  Because of this mad rush, it seems that the social aspect of life is suffering, that people are not able to really go out and enjoy the finer things in life due to the madness of the workday.

Yet, the improvements and advancements of modern technology work both ways.  Sure, mobile broadband and wireless Internet developments have increased the rate at which work is done, but devices that utilize the 4G networks and other portable connections, such as laptops and smart phones, are ameliorating the social side of life.

One key enhancement is the way that new technology has aided in quick decision-making.  For example, a group of friends in Las Vegas are dying to see a movie that just released and arrive to a theater only to find a line out the door. In fact, the line is around the block and it is obvious that the movie is selling out a rapid pace. If this type of situation happened eight to 10 years ago, those friends would be out of luck.  Sure, they could attempt to go to another theater on or off of the Strip, but who is to say that there is not a line over there?  Luckily, since a few of the friends have Iphones, they can easily access the theater’s Web site and purchase tickets instantly.  The prices may be a little higher than buying at the actual box office, but when it comes to opening night of a Hollywood blockbuster, it is worth the extra bucks to guarantee tickets.

Another common – and unfortunate – occurrence is having a credit or debit card rejected while going out to dinner.  It is the first big date and each person wants to make a good impression; there is a possibility that this night could turn into more dinners at fancy Las Vegas restaurants and an eventual relationship.  When the check comes, the man – or woman, depending on the situation – will offer to pay for the meal, giving their card to the waiter.  No less than two minutes later, the waiter returns stating that the card was declined, that a problem has occurred.  Although somewhat embarrassing, this instance does not mean the end to a perfect evening, like it did back in the day.  Now, the cardholder can access the Web site of their bank or Credit Card Company through their mobile WiMax device and figure out the problem, solving it with ease. The great night can continue without any future problems.

As seen in these examples, the social life also benefits from new technologies. Sure, people are working harder due to wireless communication, but they are also using the developments to take advantage of their social life, enjoying some nights out on the town. In a ways, modern technological advancements give to both sides of the spectrum, like a double-edged sword without the negative connotation.
