Voice cuts off on my Vonage home phone sometimes.?

I dont know whats the root cause. Any thoughts? Is it due to being close to my laptop? Internet bandwidth should not be a limiter because while talking on phone, I dont do anything intensive (like watch youtube).

When it comes to VoIP, there can be numerous reasons for breakups in voice.

Based on the info you provided, I would suspect that your Router does not have QOS (Quality of Service) enabled or properly configured. QOS is important to VoIP because it gives VoIP priority over other Internet traffic passing through your router. If you are not able to reconfigure the router QOS settings, you may consider another router that does. At a bare minimum, your router needs to be Port Forwarding (or Port Triggering) VoIP SIP and RTP ports required by your VoIP box. This would be SIP ports 5060, and RTP ports 10000-20000 UDP.

You may have no choice but to limit other Internet activity while talking on the VoIP phone.

If I’m not mistaken, 90 Kbps is the High Bandwidth setting for the Vonage service. Try using a lower setting like 60 or 30 Kbps. I think those are the Medium and Low bandwidth settings. The lower bandwidth settings may not have as good a voice fidelity, but will use less bandwidth and possibly reduce the drop-outs.

Another somewhat technical option is to connect a network Switch directly on the output of your ATT Modem. Then connect the Vonage VoIP box directly to one port of the Switch, and your Router with PC on another port of the Switch. Now, the VoIP box and Routers will each get assigned their own dynamic IP addresses from the Modem. This way you will at least know that the Router is not bottlenecking the data to your Vonage box. Most HighSpeed Internet services will allow you up to 2 dynamic IP address assignments, so you should be able to implement a network switch and have it work as I described above. You may want to call the customer service dept of your ISP to verify that you are allowed 2 IP addresses and to ask them if the 2nd IP address allocation has been enabled. I currently use this setup myself to split off my network between VoiP box and another network router. I use a Linksys 5-port switch (not a hub) which only costs less than $40 or so.
