Norton Internet Security 2010

Introduction

For the past few years, Symantec has done greatly by bringing in much required improvements into their well acclaimed ‘Norton Internet Security’ product. What has changed drastically is the load the software applies on the system; which has been reduced, hence increasing system performance and ability to multi-task. The introduction of Quorum, the new behavioral detection engine has showed the commitment Symantec has made with its consumers.

Installation

Norton has shown an improvement from last year’s edition and hence will score similarly to the previous version. The installation of Norton is better, or one can say ‘smoother’ than before making the process faster and not sluggish. Just after your installation is complete, the software is ready-to-go in just about a minute!

Design

Healthy and well designed, NIS 2010 gives you the chance to explore deeply a toolbox with which you can help keep your computer safe, access system management features and maintain a high level of security. What everyone was so curious to know about is a new feature of NIS 2010 called Quorum, which is combined with the Norton Insight. Symantec thus plans on improving security after moving well ahead in performance.

Performance

Pretty much like its competitors, NIS 2010 offers cloud -based, crowd-sourced behavioral detection engines, Norton gives you the option to opt out of submitting information during installation. Unlike most apps, Norton shows you the information that will be shared in detail. One can also set what kind of trust-level they want using the same pill-shaped slider that’s present throughout the program. The default trust exempts Norton Trusted files from scans, a full scan checks everything regardless of trust, and high trust excludes Norton Trusted files and your local files rated as “good.”

Compared to NAV 2010

Compared with Norton Antivirus 2010, the basic model, Norton Internet Security was faster on every count except for the multimedia multitasking and iTunes decoding tests. On three of the tests, start-up time, Quick Scan time, and the Microsoft Office test, NIS was markedly faster than NAV.

Tests

AV-Test noted that it detected more than 98.7 percent of malicious software on demand, and 95.4 percent of spyware on demand, with no false positives. AV-Comparitives.org awarded Norton 2009 an “Advanced” rating in the retrospective/proactive test from May 2009, while this year’s Norton 2010 earned an “Advanced+” rating in August 2009′s on-demand comparative test, noting a 98.4 percent detection rate slightly behind McAfee, Avira, and G Data, but with fewer false positives than those that achieved a higher detection rate. Norton 2009 actually scored slightly better with a 98.7 percent detection rate on the same test.

Conclusion

It still may-be hard to determine how safe Quorum and whether it truly makes your computer safe. Though NIS 2010 is still worth a try for its unbelievable performance and its transparent exposure of performance and detection data are good confidence-building tools. Combined with its multicomputer license, Norton Internet Security 2010 is a worthwhile security suite.
