What’s the law regarding movies, music and moving?

I own about 10,000 CDs and maybe 5000 DVDs and I move a lot. It’s expensive. I want to shove all of this onto a few hard drives in .avi and mp3 formats. I know how to get it done but if I go across a border one day with this material and customs checks…

1) Do I have anything to worry about? I mean I’ve purchased it but I’m not going to have receipts for that Grateful Dead CD I bought at a flea market in Oswego!

2)Could I be in trouble for the mere technicallity of having altered and reproduced the original format?

You can burn your CD’s and DVD’s onto your hard drive, because it is covered under the fair use law. Just like you can burn copies of your cd’s that you use in the car because you don’t want to scratch up the original disc, because that 1979 version of Donnie and Marie might be a collector item someday. Do not reproduce onto media and sell them for a profit. Because that is stealing and the RIAA will come down on you like a bag of hammers! Then you will see what expensive can be.
