Use Your Marketing Database to Integrate and Act On Enhancement Data

In our last article, we provided a listing of the various types of enhancement data that are available in the marketplace. To review our last article, click here.

For purposes of this article, we define enhancement data as any third-party sourced data that is appended to your existing internal consumer or business data. This newsletter focuses on where you maintain and apply your enhancement data—your marketing database.

First and foremost, your marketing database should be used to integrate the data that resides internally within your organization, including individual contact data and its associated transactional data. The fact is, most organizations do not ever truly integrate and optimize the use of their internal data, much less enhancement data.

However, your marketing database should not be limited only to data that exists within your internal operational source systems. Once your internal data is integrated into your marketing database, a key advantage of your marketing database is using it as a repository to cohesively integrate the following categories of externally sourced enhancement data with your internal data 1:

  • Demographic, lifestyle, firmographic
  • Segmentation
  • Appends/Reverse appends
  • Address change processing
  • Suppressions
  • Other

1 Some of these categories can be obtained via self-reported means, which is preferable to external sourcing, but this newsletter assumes the need for externally sourcing enhancement data.

The above data can easily be identified and sourced in the marketplace, with larger providers including companies such as Experian, Equifax, and Dun & Bradstreet to name a few. There are many smaller providers that package and re-package data for specific verticals, applications, and convenient use.

The key is not that you obtain the enhancement data, but rather where you integrate and maintain your enhancement data. Often, if an organization lacks an integrated marketing database, they may be enamored by the potential of enhancement data, but once obtained, find they cannot fit the enhancement data into an easily usable or accessible framework. In other words, there is no readily identifiable single place to keep the data.

For instance, if a business has a POS data source, a web data source, and a loyalty club data source, but does not have a marketing database that integrates these three sources, where should the enhancement data be placed? And even if the enhancement data can be logically prioritized into just one of these existing sources, does the existing source database structure support the seamless inclusion of the enhancement data? Many companies have faced this scenario, investing heavily in enhancement data, only to realize there is no practical way to obtain the intended value from the enhancement data.

The solution is to use your marketing database to integrate enhancement data with all of your other internal direct marketing data. When this integration is done properly, your marketing database will robustly support list selects/counts, analysis, and ROI analysis—using your internal RFM data in conjunction with your enhancement data. And, if your business wants to take the next logical step of predictive modeling, all of the data you need to build the model is at your fingertips. The data can be used to develop a model using all integrated internal and enhancement data, and subsequently you can apply the model, scoring each record in the marketing database each time it is updated.

When properly applied, your marketing database makes it easy and effective to manage enhancement data within the same framework as your existing internal direct marketing data. By managing both your internal and external data in a cohesive, integrated marketing database, your organization will be equipped to optimize direct marketing during these challenging times.

Statistical and Machine-Learning Data Mining by Ratner, Bruce Edition REV, 2

Statistical and Machine-Learning Data Mining by Ratner, Bruce Edition REV, 2

$50.99

The second edition of a bestseller, Statistical and Machine-Learning Data Mining: Techniques for Better Predictive Modeling and Analysis of Big Data is still the only book, to date, to distinguish between statistical data mining and machine-learning data mining. The first edition, titled Statistical Modeling and Analysis for Database Marketing: Effective Techniques for Mining Big Data, contained 17 chapters of innovative and practical statistical data mining techniques. In this second edition, renamed to reflect the increased coverage of machine-learning data mining techniques, the author has completely revised, reorganized, and repositioned the original chapters and produced 14 new chapters of creative and useful machine-learning data mining techniques. In sum, the 31 chapters of simple yet insightful quantitative techniques make this book unique in the field of data mining literature. The statistical data mining methods effectively consider big data for identifying structures (variables) with the appropriate predictive power in order to yield reliable and robust large-scale statistical models and analyses. In contrast, the author’s own GenIQ Model provides machine-learning solutions to common and virtually unapproachable statistical problems. GenIQ makes this possible ? its utilitarian data mining features start where statistical data mining stops. This book contains essays offering detailed background, discussion, and illustration of specific methods for solving the most commonly experienced problems in predictive modeling and analysis of big data. They address each methodology and assign its application to a specific type of problem. To better ground readers, the book provides an in-depth discussion of the basic methodologies of predictive modeling and analysis. While this type of overview has been attempted before, this approach offers a truly nitty-gritty, step-by-step method that both tyros and experts in the field can enjoy playing with.

Search engines and many web applications such as online marketing agents, intelligent shopping agents, and web data mining agents rely on web crawlers to collect information from the web, which has led to an enormous amount of web traffic generated by crawlers alone. Due to the unregulated open-access nature of the web, crawler activities are extremely diverse. Such crawling activities can be regulated from the server side by deploying the Robots Exclusion Protocol in a file called robots.txt. Ethical crawlers (and many commercial) will follow the rules specified in robots.txt files. Since the Robots Exclusion Protocol has become a de facto standard for crawler regulation, a thorough study of the regulation and behavior of crawlers with respect to the Robots Exclusion Protocol allows us to understand the impact of search engines and the current situation of privacy and security issues related to web crawlers.;The Robots Exclusion Protocol allows websites to explicitly specify an access preference for each crawler by name. Such biases may lead to a “rich get richer” situation, in which a few popular search engines ultimately dominate the web because they have preferred access to resources that are inaccessible to others. We propose a metric to evaluate the degree of bias to which specific crawlers are subjected. We have investigated 7,593 websites covering education, government, news, and business domains, and collected 2,925 distinct robots.txt files. Results of content and statistical analysis of the data confirm that the crawlers of popular search engines and information portals, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, are generally favored by most of the websites we have sampled. The biases toward popular search engines are verified by applying the bias metric to 4.6 million robots.txt files from the web. These results also show a strong correlation between the search engine market share and the bias toward particular search engine crawlers.;Since the Robots Exclusion

Data mining is becoming a pervasive technology in activities as diverse as using historical data to predict the success of a marketing campaign, looking for patterns in financial transactions to discover illegal activities or analyzing genome sequences. From this perspective, it was just a matter of time for the discipline to reach the important area of computer security. Applications Of Data Mining In Computer Security presents a collection of research efforts on the use of data mining in computer security.Data mining has been loosely defined as the process of extracting information from large amounts of data. In the context of security, the information we are seeking is the knowledge of whether a security breach has been experienced, and if the answer is yes, who is the perpetrator. This information could be collected in the context of discovering intrusions that aim to breach the privacy of services, data in a computer system or alternatively, in the context of discovering evidence left in a computer system as part of criminal activity.Applications Of Data Mining In Computer Security concentrates heavily on the use of data mining in the area of intrusion detection. The reason for this is twofold. First, the volume of data dealing with both network and host activity is so large that it makes it an ideal candidate for using data mining techniques. Second, intrusion detection is an extremely critical activity. This book also addresses the application of data mining to computer forensics. This is a crucial area that seeks to address the needs of law enforcement in analyzing the digital evidence.Applications Of Data Mining In Computer Security is designed to meet the needs of a professional audience composed of researchers and practitioners in industry and graduate level students in computer science.
