How can i get my Thouroughbred xracehorse to sell faster she’s been on the market for 6 months…?
I have an x racehorse her names Madonna and she’s been on the market for 6 months and nobody’s wanted to buy her what should i do?
i am advertising her on the internet and in the paper and i have posters up…
and i’m selling her for $2000-$2200
Such as life in the Equine Industry during a recession!! Especially during the winter months, selling a horse is difficult.
My suggestion is to take all your ads off- take her completely off the market because she’s been on for so long people are used to seeing her. Now they’re thinking, “This mare was listed 6mos ago and she still hasn’t sold? There’s something wrong with her!” Doesn’t matter what your ad says- that’s what they’re thinking!!
Take her off for at least three months. During that time, get her into training. Work with your trainer towards specific goals- is she a jumper or good at dressage? Whatever she’s good at, that’s what your training goals should be.
Come March when spring is just around the corner (and hopefully the economy is coming back) is when you want to relist her. Mention that she’s had 3 mos of training for dressage, jumping, etc. DO NOT mention your trainer’s name! Remember, you’re not selling your trainer, you’re trying to sell your horse! (Of course the exception to that rule is if your trainer is truly big time: George Morris, Robert Dover, Beezie Madden, etc.)
Before relisting her, do your research! Pick three online equine sights: LocalHorse.com and AgDirect.com are two of my favorites. Search for horses of the same breed and around the same age. See what your competition is- how much training, what ribbons/classes have they won, what’s their breeding, and what’s their asking price? Price your horse accordingly, but also allow for some wiggle room.
List her on no more than two internet sites. If you don’t get anyone asking about her in two months, withdraw your ad from that website and go to another. In other words, it makes no sense to pay for an ad that’s not getting a response!
List her in your local paper ONLY if there’s horses listed for sale there on a regular basis. Again, why pay for advertising if it’s not going towards your intended market? With the advacement of the internet, the local paper for classified ads is becoming obsolete.
Take flyers to your local feed store & tack shops. When the show season starts in your area, take her to local shows- ask them to announce she’s being “offered for sale” when she comes into the arena and especially when she places in a class!

Edited to add: when you relist, try not to list her as “ex-race horse” as this brings a lot of negative images into the mind of your potential buyer. Try not to use the words: ex, no, not, nothing.
In other words: “Not started under saddle until 6 years old” – you can see how that simple statement brings up loads of questions that the buyer just doesn’t want to take the time to ask. Your potential buyer is going to skip right by your ad and on to another.
USE: “Started under saddle at 6 years old through no fault of his own, he has really excelled in training and is well on his way to becoming a great dressage horse.” Now your buyer knows that the horse wasn’t lame, sick or injured – just plain started late and is thinking positively about maybe giving you a call to set up a date/time to meet.
