Learn SEO by seeing how your competitors rank high on Google
Have you ever wondered why your competitors are ranking so well on Google for a keyword where you are not?
Have you felt frustrated, because you know their website is of a lesser quality than yours, and you know you provide better services and products?
But in the end, that does not matter – because your target audience are finding their website, not yours.
A few years ago I was having the same experience, my copywriting website looked great and I knew we offered an excellent service – we just weren’t ranking where we wanted on Google.
So I made a commitment to learn SEO and figure find out how my competitors were ranking so high.
I set about analysing their websites and soon realised one simple truth – nothing is secret on the Internet. I can look at everything about their website from which keywords they are optimising for to their domain age and Google Page Rank. I can also find out who is linking to them and what anchor text they’ve used.
In other words, everything my competitors have done to optimise their website can be discovered.
This allows me to then create a plan with my top competitor as a benchmark of what I need to do.
By doing this, SEO then becomes a ‘tick box exercise’ – the mystery and frustration are gone! I know exactly how many links I have to build, the quality of those links and what to do with my on-page SEO.
The question is – how do you get all this information?
Originally, I did this manually using a number of free online tools. However this took a while and was quite tedious.
I’ve tried different software that does this for you. Most were not that great, but I found one that blew me away.
Within five seconds of typing in your keyword it tells you everything you need to know about your top ten competitors. There is then an option to insert you own website to compare stats.
This information used to take days to gather! It addition to giving all the information you need to plan optimising your website, it also teaches you SEO.
After a while you can start seeing patterns in how websites are ranked.
Beyond this, it also has a great keyword tool, a rank tracker that reports how your website is moving up in Google and a link building tool.
The best thing about this software is there is no monthly fee, just a one off payment.
