Are Virtual Laser Keyboards The Next Big Thing?

Most people can assume that laser keyboards are possible. Knowing of newer technology like the kinect and infrared motion sensing webcams. Laser keyboards apply the same technology in a more conventional way. The concept sounds great, but are laser keyboards going to be the next big thing?

A virtual laser keyboard performs on 3 basic modules. First a red laser with a QWERTY keyboard template is projected onto a flat surface. An infrared camera emits invisible light the user can’t see. When the light is reflected in a certain position like a finger on top of a key it then goes to a sensor module that makes a decision based on the location of the light. The decision transfers to a micro controller that interprets the key stroke. It outputs this information to the computer making it perform like a regular keyboard.

A laser keyboard has immense advantages over a standalone keyboard. It never needs to be cleaned since it is projected light. Keys will never get stuck and it’s all portable to carry around. It can be used in the dark, they are easy to maintain, and laser keyboards look very cool and futuristic.

These laser keyboards may present problems that traditional keyboard users may not like. Some users point out a significant loss in typing speed. It takes some time getting used to. They don’t have that tactile feeling most people like and on top of all that these devices generally cost around 190 dollars which nearly all computer users wouldn’t buy if they already have a regular keyboard.

The future of laser keyboards is unknown. Maybe mobile phones will incorporate this type of technology in some way. It would be great for someone with big fingers who can’t type well on small buttons. Maybe all-in-one desktops could use this idea getting rid of the keyboard altogether. I’m excited to see what happens with this newer technology and how big companies may play and tinker with it till something totally cool arrives.
