The iPed or Apad as it is popularly known is the Chinese clone of the Apple iPad. Before you dismiss it scornfully please note that the Apad does not run on some absurd piece of software, normally associated with Chinese electronics products. The name Apad comes from the fact that it runs on Android Operating System.
The astounding success of Apple iPad has lead to the creation of many similar look alike but the Apad is on a different plane altogether. It is available to buy right now in Shenzan, China and also on a few Chinese trading websites. The fact that it costs less than the Apple iPad can make a huge difference to its sales potential. The specs are somewhat different from those available in the iPad but the design and the style is exactly the same.
Apad looks to take advantage of the few flaws seen with the iPad specs and design. It definitely scores over iPad as it comes with a webcam, USB Port, memory card slot and other features. The biggest difference of course is in the Operating Systems. While Apple iPad runs on iPhone OS, the Android cannot be considered inferior by any stretch of imagination. The iPed or Apad has some attractive features that can definitely appeal to today’s generation. It features a 7″ touchscreen display as compared to the 9.7″ screen of the iPad and comes with 800X430 resolution. It has a built-in gmail email support and weighs half of that of other PC tablets at 399gms. (iPod weighs 700g). The 1GB memory is supported by a 600 MHz RockChip 2808A processor. Other important features are MicroSD support, 802.11b/g WiFi and High Definition Video playback. It also has a 3.5mm jack. You can reach YouTube with a one-click access.
The fact that the Apad runs on Android also gives you access to Google apps such as Chrome Browser, Google Maps and Google Talk. The price is the most stunning part of this amazing device. While an Apple iPad can cost you $ 499 for 16 GB WiFi, the iPed is available to buy online for just $ 149 USD. Now you know why the Apad or the iPed is making such huge waves in China.
While there is no doubt that the iPad is the real thing and whatever the Chinese clone Apad does, it will still draw comparisons to performance and longevity. But the abysmally low price at which they are providing all those stunning features is what is making everyone sit up and take notice of the product.
While the price and the features available in the Apad are definitely good news, there are some major drawbacks too when compared to the iPad. One of the areas of concern is the speed. The video replay is reported as mediocre. The 126MB RAM is too low and you cannot run too many applications simultaneously. If you try hard enough the applications are forced to close down on their own. That definitely is a major hitch. There is some problem with the quality of the case and the frame. The AC adapter is of poor quality. Many times you are forced to leave the tablet in idle condition while it gets charged.
The Apad gets heated very fast as compared to the iPad and the battery does not last too long. At the most you can use it for two hours at a stretch. Pictures in the video replay get cropped and enlarging it affects the quality of the video in a major way. Apad does not support Flash.
Which bring us back to the original one, the Apple iPad. Undoubtedly the real thing is a great performer and is still preferred by those who don’t mind paying any price for a genuine, deeply researched invention like the iPad. Yet, getting a full-featured, expandable, WiFi enabled tablet for just around $ 150 is not half as bad.
