Portable satellite internet access solution?

During the next 1-2 years I will be spending a lot of time in the rural areas of Africa. I need to figure out how to get a reliable and fast Internet access in the middle of nowhere. Ideally, I am looking for: (1) a satellite Internet provider that I can sign up with; (2) a portable briefcase-size Internet access device that I can carry around that can talk to the satellite. It would help if I can charge that device from a car adapter, as well as from the wall plug.

Any ideas/recommendations will be very appreciated!
Also, I may need help configuring the device.

What you are probably looking for is an RBGAN or BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network). These are pretty much small satellite Internet terminals meant for use in remote locations. In fact, many of the “streamed” news reports you have seen from Iraq use this exact device. Because of of the wide variety of applications for these devices, there are also just as many accessories so you will have no trouble finding any adapters necessary to use/charge them in just about any situation. RBGANs are currently being phased out for the newer BGANS which means that there are very good prices on them right now, but coverage will not be available after 12/31/08. Sooo… If you know you won’t need it past 2008, go for the RGBAN, otherwise spring for the BGAN. I suggest you go with the INMARSAT satellite system since it is very well known and the one I am most familiar with. Satellite internet is NOT fast (normally around 144kbps, NOT cheap and you WILL be charged by the meg (think $10/MB).
