Nintendo 3DS – Web Connectivity Key To New Portable Sport Products

Appeal to casual gamers

With both game companies placing more persistent online access as a priority in their new techniques, expect more social video games.

Sport development studios are mulling new ways to connect players and plan to adopt characteristics from smartphone apps. These include downloadable extras and statistical ladders for comparing scores and in-game achievements.

For Japanese game publisher Konami, implementing social networking functions is a major priority, President Shinji Hirano said in November.

“I think people’s demands are changing,” Hirano said. “Social networks like Facebook bring customers to expect more communication through the product.”

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has boasted in presentations, just about as a footnote, that the iPhone and iPod together have overtaken products from Nintendo and Sony to become the No. 1 transportable gaming platform.
