The truth of the matter is that you can buy a wireless router at any electronics store or department store that have electronics’ sections. What most people, those who are not tech geeks, mean when they ask this type of question, is where can they go to buy a wireless router with staff that can tell them what type they need.

You could go to any number of stores and they would all try to sell you the most expensive model they have but you would still have very little in the way of knowledge.  Chances are that if you buy a very expensive model it will perform beautifully. But how much is too much, do you really need all the extras that come with this model. Why pay for functionality that you will never use. The market has a wide range of designs in all price ranges. Getting the best value for your money means knowing how much performance level you actually require from a wireless router.

With all of the choices it is possible to be very confused if you just walk into a store, then begin looking them over. The terminology in the descriptions will likely mean nothing to you. Before attempting to buy a wireless router educate yourself on the terms used to describe its every function.

A wireless router is at the core a device, which allows you to connect all of your components to your network, this is done without the use of a lot of different cables. The term for what it does is “Wireless Access Point” or you may see just its acronym WAP.  This is the Ethernet router and switch. When purchasing a wireless router, be sure to look for buzzwords like “ local area network” the LAN and the word Ethernet.

The letters and numbers that are used in association with wireless routers generally are undecipherable by the lay user. The letters are B, G, N, and A. The letters describes the protocol or action each router takes. They are there to show you how to connect the wireless router to your other wireless devices. The most common of all are the B and G that work on 2.4 Giga hertz frequency. This is the frequency used by most of the appliances you already have in your home.

This is usually enough juice for the average user. Your next consideration will be Internet speed. The fastest cable Internet can only give you around 5-6 Mbps. An 802.11b wireless router for example, is still way faster than that. Unless you are transferring huge amounts of data from one wireless device to another you won’t need anything faster than that.

Also as a final though t you should look for wireless routers with built in protections.  Firewalls are more important with wireless routers because the signal can be piggy backed and all your data either copied or corrupted. Now that you know what to look for you can look most anywhere.
