In this dissertation, we employ a multi-faceted approach to tackle these issues. Specifically, measurement studies are performed to experimentally quantify the ground truth related to the robustness of the Internet infrastructure and security threats in the wild. This work is complemented by research on future Internet threats and mechanisms to contain them. The source of these threats are novel classes of malware which exploit the increasing attack surface, presented by rapidly evolving Internet technologies. As an instance of quantifying the emerging security threats in the wild, we performed a wide-scale measurement study of the Storm botnet. This botnet, which represents the leading edge in botnet technology, uses a distributed peer-to-peer(P2P) architecture and aggressively defends itself. We developed a crawler which actively scourged the P2P botnet, to determine its size and other structural properties. This study shows how traditional P2P distributed hash tables (DHTs) differ from botnet DHTs, eventhough they use the same underlying P2P protocol – mainly due to the diverse interests of participating entities within. In particular, we could precisely identify nodes which poison the DHT index, using simple heuristics. Such a capability is particularly alarming to the security community, considering that the storm botnet aggressively defends itself by carrying out DDoS attacks. The bigger implication of this study is that current botnet monitoring techniques easily lend themselves to miscreant counter-intelligence techniques, thereby motivating the need for stealthier monitoring techniques. Since network defense is essentially an arms race, we not only address current threats, but also look ahead to threats that are likely to arise in the future. We show that, as mobile devices become

The aim of this evaluation study was to adapt a dementia education program from the U.S. and to evaluate its effects on enhancing nursing caregivers’ (NCs’) knowledge, attitudes, and perceived self-efficacy (K.A.P.) toward dementia care; and NCs’ self perceived health perception (HP), quality of life (QoL), caregiving stress (CS), and job satisfaction (JS) in Taiwan long-term care facilities (LTCFs). The Chinese version of Dementia Education Program (CDEP) emphasized the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and quality of dementia care with three 3-hours in-service education sessions. Ninety NCs from 55 LTCFs in Taiwan were enrolled but only the 45 Direct NCs were analyzed. The study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative data. The demographic data were gathered on the pre-CDEP; the other scales were gathered on pre-, one week, one month, and three months after the completion of the CDEP (T0, T1, T2, and T3); and the Global Program Evaluation (GPE) was collected once at T1. Except for QOL, HP, and JS, the measurement scales were developed from literature review and internet search and input from two expert panels. The significant inverse relationships between the CS and the Positive Attitude (r = -.246, p < .05), PSE (r = -.231, p < .05), QoL (r = -.220, p = < .05), and GPE (r = -.250, p < .05) confirm the criterion validity of measures of dependent variables. These scales exhibited good validity and internal consistency. Repeated measures ANOVA demonstrated the expected changes of the K. P. and CS at T1 (p = .000, .000, & .004), and Positive and Negative Attitudes (p = .005 & .009) at T2; all were significant at T3 (K.A.P. CS, & HP; p = .000, .004, .000, .000, & .008). Thus the changes were observed over a three-month period for most dependent variables. Qualitative data revealed the NCs’ perspectives and suggestions about the CDEP. Implications are discussed in the light of these findings.
