Jam Out Anywhere With Satellite Internet

If there is one thing that the Internet has revolutionized in the last 15 years, it is the music industry. Obviously, with that statement there is no argument from anyone.  What once was a dominating enterprise of corporations and recording studios, the music industry has completely transformed due to the existence and advancement of high-speed Internet services like cable and satellite broadband. Now, compact discs are a thing of the past and anyone, anywhere can jam out to any tune they desire with a Wi-Fi or satellite Internet link up.

The whole music industry dilemma seemed to have started with one music file sharing Web site: Napster. Back in the 56K days, no one seemed to notice the users of Napster constantly sharing and transferring data over the World Wide Web. People’s music libraries increased slowly, since download speeds moved at a snail’s pace. But once T1, T3 and DSL connections started getting into the mix, the music industry began to feel the repercussions. People no longer needed to buy over priced CDs at a store for a few good songs. Now they could simply download whatever song they wanted for free. Production studios as well as individual bands got scared.

From there, things just got more and more complicated. Napster went to court for violating copyright laws and was eventually shut down by the United States Government. Yet, while the music industry was busy destroying Napster, more and more file sharing sites started to pop up. Add to that the development and popularity of satellite Internet, expanding the high-speed Internet mainframe to the rural and mountainous areas, and the stronghold that big time recording studios once had on the music business started to slip.

Now, the music industry has completely changed and evolved. Big companies like Tower Records and Virgin have either shut down most of their CD stores or have declared bankruptcy. Smaller, more independent labels have begun gaining popularity and such Web sites like Youtube.com and Myspace have allowed major bands and the small, solo acts in small rural areas to broadcast their tunes to the world.

As consumers, cable and satellite Internet connections have done the opposite for the music industry; the situation has ameliorated completely. Now, people can read about a particular band online, find their new CD, read reviews, preview songs and then purchase it on iTunes or another online music store – or download it illegally, considering that many still utilize black market music sites. With dial-up Internet, simply previewing a song took at least 10 minutes.  Now, the entire process of discovering a new band and jamming out to their tunes on a portable MP3 player can take 10 minutes from start to finish.

And although the day of the CD is slowly coming to an end, the digital music era appears to show no sign of ending. With iTunes officially announcing its 10 billionth song download a few weeks ago; more and more people are choosing to use their satellite broadband or cable connections to tap in to the music world than ever before. It seems like CDs and big recording studios will soon be just a blip in the history of music, highlighted in high school history curriculums and museum exhibitions around the globe.
