The Differences Between Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus

Almost all computer users are familiar with the many irritations that are associated and caused by adware, spyware and computer viruses. Although they are similar in some ways, there are distinct differences between each of them.

First we should discuss Spywares, which are software programs that are not created to deliberately damage your computer. It is a software created to make pathways for someone other than the computer owner to communicate with the computer. Normally spywares record the various types of web sites you visit which are later used by web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups.

Because this is annoying to most users, they will try to find ways that will prevent this from happening. Spyware is much more invasive than adware. This is because mini-programs work behind the scenes within the main spyware software to record your keystrokes, scan your hard disk files, look at your cookies information and will even find what Web browser settings you have.

The spyware then will send the information that it had gathered to the spyware author. The agent will then use this information for advertising and marketing purposes. Another reason why people hate spyware is because the information it gathers is often sold to other companies.

Now let’s take a look at adware. Adware is a more legitimate and acceptable type of freeware. Similar to spyware, adwares are advertising materials which are packaged into software and various programs that can be installed automatically once that particular program or software is added into the computer system. There are some forms of adware, on the other hand, that download advertising contents as a particular application is being utilized. Unfortunately a lot of adware’s have begun to do the same thing as spywares and take the information they track and sell it to other marketing programmers.

Some signs of spyware infections include pop-up ads that seem to not be related to the site you are viewing. More often than not though, spyware pop-ups are advertisements about adult content. Another thing to watch out for, is if your computer begins to slow down and perform in an unusual way, it could mean spyware has found it’s way into your system. Or, if you notice your Windows desktop beginning to take longer to load, that can also be a good indication that you need to check for spyware infections.

The third topic on our list to discuss is computer viruses, which are always designed to be very harmful to your computer. Someone, somewhere designed a program to create chaos and possibly even destroy the data on your computer. Destroying everything is what they were written to do and often these types of viruses replicate in order to infect as many systems they possibly can and as quickly as possible too.

Often today, a lot of anti-virus software programs also provide spyware and adware scanning removal utilities. There are special anti-virus programs available too, that will locate, delete and destroy any spyware or adware programs they find. There are two main kinds you can purchase, which are either an anti-virus software or anti-spyware, both will focus on identifying any virus, adware or spyware on your system in order to delete it.

They then remove it and any other components located in the system registry as well as any other places it is found in your computer. It is therefore good to update your virus or spyware scanner on a regular basis, to ensure that your computer is protected from the thousands of spyware and viruses on the internet and on the shared media. You should also take notice of programs which make claims to offer only adware, as that often is not true.

Keep in mind that adware is sometimes actually spyware in disguise, so don’t be fooled by their claims. It is important therefore, to learn how to setup a system firewall and always turn on your pop-up blockers to minimize computer infection and ensure the security of all your computer files.
