Do you think it’s possible to create a large internet movement where ”real” democracy prevails?

Do you think it’s possible to create a large internet movement where ”real” democracy prevails?
What I mean is, internet users can come together and create policies for anyone who enters this specific community. We can vote for what we believe, express and defend our opinions and regulate laws that all in the community should abide.
I have a page on Yahoo! 360 (My user name is Catz007 in there) and it’s called ‘The Spark’. I want others to join and help me create this movement. With large numbers we will have a strong voice in the internet and possibly the resl world.
It’s just a thought. All the religions and revolutions began with just a thought.
Can you people help me? Together we can do something, but alone we are doomed to fail. Check the page out pleae, thanx
Sudonym x: Enforcement – yes you’re right. But this is a free community. If you believe in a law you will do it anyhow. But all laws will have law-breakers. What is important is that their voices are heard.

How would you enforce the decisions? Without enforcement, there is no point.

The Internet in Indonesia's New Democracy by Hill, David T.; Sen, Krishna Edition , 1

The Internet in Indonesia’s New Democracy by Hill, David T.; Sen, Krishna Edition , 1

$15.17

The Internet in Indonesia?s New Democracy is a detailed study of legal, economic, political and cultural practices surrounding the provision and consumption of the Internet in Indonesia at the turn of the twenty-first century. Hill and Sen detail the emergence of the Internet into Indonesia in the mid-1990s, and cover its growth through the dramatic economic and political crises of 1997 and the subsequent transition to democracy.Conceptually the Internet is seen as a global phenomenon, with global implications, however this book develops a way of thinking about the Internet within the limits of geo-political categories of nations and provinces. The political turmoil in Indonesia provides a unique context in which to understand the specific local and national consequences of a global, universal technology.

Democracy Across Borders by Bohman, James Edition , 0

Democracy Across Borders by Bohman, James Edition , 0

$22.49

Today democracy is both exalted as the best means to realize human rights and seen as weakened because of globalization and delegation of authority beyond the nation-state. In this provocative book, James Bohman argues that democracies face a period of renewal and transformation and that democracy itself needs redefinition according to a new transnational ideal. Democracy, he writes, should be rethought in the plural; it should no longer be understood as rule by the people (dêmos), singular, with a specific territorial identification and connotation, but as rule by peoples (dêmoi), across national boundaries. Bohman shows that this new conception of transnational democracy requires reexamination of such fundamental ideas as the people, the public, citizenship, human rights, and federalism, and he argues that it offers a feasible approach to realizing democracy in a globalized world. In his account, Bohman establishes the conceptual foundations of transnational democracy by examining in detail current theories of democracy beyond the nation-state (including those proposed by Rawls, Habermas, Held, and Dryzek) and offers a deliberative alternative. He considers the importance of communicative freedom in the transnational public sphere (including networked communication over the Internet), human rights as the normative basis of transnational democracy, and the European Union as a transnational polity. Finally, he examines the relationship between peace and democracy, concluding that peace requires democratization on interacting state and suprastate levels.

Democracy and the Internet by Simon, Leslie David; Corrales, Javier; Wolfensberger, Donald R. Edition ILL, 0

$13.49

Is the internet intrinsically democratic, making every user a publisher and supporting new varieties of expression and association? Or is it a dangerous vehicle of propaganda, helping repressive governments to deceive their people and mobs to drive democratic governments to extremes? In Democracy and the Internet: Allies or Adversaries? three essays draw evidence from starkly different regions of the world. Leslie David Simon turns to one of the world's least democratic regions, the Muslim nations of the Middle East; Javier Corrales reviews the weak democracies of Latin America, and Donald R. Wolfensberger studies the world's most visible representative institution, the U.S. Congress. The authors find that the internet is generally making a positive difference. In some places people are newly receiving important outside news and communications. In others, human rights organizations and banned newspapers can make their cases online for both domestic and international audiences. Use by extremist groups has caused little damage compared to the benefits. The chief hangup is limited availability, either because the market is too weak to spread technology without government support or because repressive states are restricting access. At Congress, the internet was crucial in preserving operations when the post-September 11 anthrax attack shut down Capitol Hill, and more opportunities exist, but there is also the danger of overload.

Saving Democracy by O'Leary, Kevin Edition , 1

Saving Democracy by O’Leary, Kevin Edition , 1

$22.49

Saving Democracy presents a bold yet practical plan for reinventing American democracy for the twenty-first century. The book diagnoses contemporary political ills as symptoms of corruption in our large republic and develops a new understanding of representative democracy. Building on the ideas of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, Saving Democracy shows how it is possible to combine the traditional town hall and the Internet to fashion a new theory of representative government that empowers citizens and bridges the enormous gap that now exists between the political elite and the average voter.Under the author’s plan, in each of the nation’s 435 congressional districts a local assembly of 100 citizens, selected by lot, would meet to discuss the major domestic and international issues. The role of this assembly would be deliberative and advisory and its views would constitute a second, more sophisticated and informed measure of public opinion than traditional public opinion polls. The next step would be the establishment of the People’s House, which would hold actual legislative power.

Democracy and the News by Gans, Herbert J. Edition , 0

Democracy and the News by Gans, Herbert J. Edition , 0

$13.49

American democracy was founded on the belief that ultimate power rests in an informed citizenry. But that belief appears naive in an era when private corporations manipulate public policy and the individual citizen is dwarfed by agencies, special interest groups, and other organizations that have a firm grasp on real political and economic power. In Democracy and the News, one of America’s most astute social critics explores the crucial link between a weakened news media and weakened democracy. Building on his 1979 classic media critique Deciding What’s News, Herbert Gans shows how, with the advent of cable news networks, the internet, and a proliferation of other sources, the role of contemporary journalists has shrunk, as the audience for news moves away from major print and electronic media to smaller and smaller outlets. Gans argues that journalism also suffers from assembly-line modes of production, with the major product being publicity for the president and other top political officials, the very people citizens most distrust. In such an environment, investigative journalism–which could offer citizens the information they need to make intelligent critical choices on a range of difficult issues–cannot flourish. But Gans makes several incisive suggestions about what the news media can do to recapture its role in American society and what political and economic changes might move us closer to a true citizen’s democracy. Touching on questions of critical national importance, Democracy and the News sheds new light on the vital importance of a healthy news media for a healthy democracy.

Democracy Rising by Konecnik, Ken Edition , 1

Democracy Rising by Konecnik, Ken Edition , 1

$17.99

The campaign for the 2008 presidential election raised the hopes of many Americans. Not only were they elated by the outcome, but many also considered that the process had worked better than it had in recent years. While author Ken Konecnik agrees with some of these evaluations, his view of the manner by which we elect our presidents remains critical. In Democracy Rising, Konecnik peers into every corner of the electoral operation, and doesnt like what he sees. The list of culprits begins with advertising, and runs through the Internet, the media, the two-party system, the electoral college system, and an American populace that is all too often apathetic about exercising its franchise. Offering examples from American history along with ideas on how the nation can return to some of the principles of the Founding Fathers, Konecnik gives voice to the hope that America will soon witness Democracy Rising.

He examines how citizens and organizations use it for political purposes and is especially interested as to whether new technology is making Americans more engaged in their government. This study about the internet and politics combines historical and survey analysis with case studies of political events.

Internet Politics by Chadwick, Andrew Edition ILL, 0

Internet Politics by Chadwick, Andrew Edition ILL, 0

$18.49

In the developed world, there is no longer an issue of whether the Internet affects politics–but rather how, why, and with what consequences. With the Internet now spreading at a breathtaking rate in the developing world, the new medium is fraught with tensions, paradoxes, and contradictions. How do we make sense of these? In this major new work, Andrew Chadwick addresses such concerns, providing the first comprehensive overview of Internet politics. Internet Politics examines the impact of new communication technologies on political parties and elections, pressure groups, social movements, local democracy, public bureaucracies, and global governance. It also analyzes persistent and controversial policy problems, including the digital divide; the governance of the Internet itself; the tensions between surveillance, privacy, and security; and the political economy of the Internet media sector. The approach is explicitly comparative, providing numerous examples from the U.S., Britain, and many other countries. Written in a clear and accessible style, this theoretically sophisticated and up-to-date text reveals the key difference the Internet makes in how we do politics and how we think about political life. A companion website, www.andrewchadwick.com, offers dynamic, regularly updated material to supplement the book, along with PowerPoint slides for students and instructors, data spreadsheets, and additional case studies. Featuring numerous figures, tables, and text boxes, Internet Politics is ideal for undergraduate and graduate courses in political science, international relations, and communication studies.

Just as the automobile radically changed people’s lives at the beginning of the 20th century, so too has the revolution in online services (including blogging, podcasting, videogaming, shopping, and social networking) and cell phone use changed our lives at the turn of the 21st century. In addition, many other services, activities, and devices–including the Palm Pilot, the BlackBerry, the iPod, digital cameras, and cell cameras–have been made possible by the combination of these two technologies. Whereas the automobile allowed people for the first time to work in cities and live comfortably in the suburbs, extending the long commute beyond the limits previously circumscribed by public transportation, the Internet and cell phone allow us to interact with others from around the world–or a few hundred miles–from where we work or live, giving rise to the telecommuting phenomenon and allowing us to stay in touch with friends and families in the new virtual environment. As Hanson demonstrates in her new book, these technologies enable us to work and play 24/7, anytime, anywhere. What does this mean for us as individuals and for society as a whole? What are the social implications of this technological revolution that we have witnessed in the short span of about 20 years? Do people of different generations use these technologies in the same ways, or do they adopt them to support their communication habits formed at different times of their lives? How does the illusion of control provided by these technologies affect the way we think about what is meaningful in our lives? Hanson examines the wide-ranging impact of this change. How do individuals posting their viewpoints on the Internetaffect democracy? Is it possible to ever completely prevent identity theft over the Internet? How permanent is information stored on the Internet or on a hard drive? Do cell phones change the way people think about privacy or the way they communicate with others? Does email? Do videogames
