Do cable modems have to be activated by the cable company?

Heres the deal, I have a coax cable run over to my neighbors house. Were we used to leech cable off of them. Now the they have cable internet. I am wondering if I could hook a modem on my end and have my own internet. Is this possible with having to pay my own internet bill. I believe they have Comcast, if that helps.

The internet is activated through the cable line, so you would get a signal sent to your modem. I believe it would work since the activation is through the cable line, not the modem. Try it and see.
