How online gaming has changed the game world

The Sega Dreamcast was the first home video game console to have a modem built in to play video games on the internet. They wanted to create a space online for gamers to not only play games but to purchase entire video games and stream music. It was a grand idea, but it never came to be with Sega since the Dreamcast had such an early burial. But they couldn’t have possibly known how it would really take off with later consoles.

The PlayStation 2 and Xbox had the ability to go online as well, but they didn’t really have much power to do much with at the time. Much like the Dreamcast, it had the right idea but not the strength to accomplish much with it. But the next generation was a different ballgame. With the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 3 the online aspect of gaming truly took off. With the online aspect you can update the current weather, buy entire video games online, and download demos of upcoming games! You can even download and play entire games from the past! So you can have Sega Genesis games and Super Nintendo games all in one system! There are also online communities where you can go and talk to other real people and help them on game quests and so on.

Take the popular Xbox game Halo for instance. That game is great fun and has a great story line, one of which can be played online with another person for extra fun! But you can go to the Xbox Live service and play with up to 16 other people at once, and can communicate with them via headset or Kinect hardware. You can split into two teams, one red and one blue, and fight against each other in a variety of missions! You can call up and invite your real life friends on the system and get together for a good time, even if they are on the other side of the world! That makes the possibilities endless as far as gaming goes. Back in the older days once you beat the story mode that really was it. You could do some bonus stages, and just replay it in general, but that didn’t really hold you much longer. The old Genesis games do for me personally, but most games lose their fun after you’ve beaten it completely. But with the online mode in games now you can totally ignore the fact that the game has an actual story and just enjoy onlline play!

I know others do, and I do for sure, enjoy the online play in gaming consoles now days. I love playing Halo 3 online and not even playing the story, although that’s fun too. It’s fun and enjoyable to play online against other real people with skill instead of a computer controlled character. And we can all thank Sega for the online gaming that we enjoy today.
