Junya Watanabe: Masculine Is The New Sexy

Many look up to Junya Watanabe as the protégé of Rei Kawakubo, designer for Comme des Garcons. Watanabe was born in Fukushima, Japan in 1961. He studied at the Bunka Fashion College and graduated in 1984. After graduation, he started to work for Comme des Garcons as a patternmaker. His superiors saw his potential and promoted him to chief designer for Tricot knitwear. Later, he was given the chance to work under his own name at the Comme des Garcons.

What makes Watanabe standout is his signature distinctive and innovative design. Just like his mentor Rei Kawakubo, he is well-known for synthetic and technologically advanced textiles and fabrics. He mixes them with more traditional materials like cotton. Many people consider Watanabe as the “techno couture” designer for his flair of creating unusually structured clothing made out of technical and modern materials.
