Auto Racing – Goodwood Revival 2009 – The First Day Of Events
The track was blessed by Canon Lionel Webber, chaplain to the British Racing Drivers Club, around 9.15am before Lord March opened proceedings with the first race of the day, the Goodwood Trophy…a spectacular array of the ERAs…very thrilling. Chris Rea raced his Lotus VI in the second race of the day, the Madgewick Cup, managing to hold on to 13th position throughout most of the race.
The Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy was next with the legendary Wayne Gardner taking up pole position only to drop back to second place after the switch over mid race to his racing partner. On Sunday the riders will change over, leaving Wayne as the second rider…so, we’ll see what happens then!
At approximately 11.10 am Rowan Atkinson, who unfortunately was not racing this weekend, did three circuits of the track sat in an armchair on top of his famous mini from the television serious Mr. Bean ahead of the line up for the St. Mary’s Trophy Part One which consisted purely of Minis this year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this iconic car. Unfortunately the antics of “Mr. Bean” completely deflected some of the attention away from Lord Mandelson’s thoughts on the British car industry!
As of right now, BMW, Mercedes, Renalt, Ferrari and Toyota supply engines but BMW is pulling out after the 2009 season and Ferrari does not know if they will continue when their contract is up in 2012. Ferrari has been with the sport of F1 for over 60 consecutive years, you know there is a problem if they are pulling out.
A first for Goodwood Revival this weekend….none other than the Vulcan flew in to demonstrate its formidable presence in the skies. A huge monster with a roar to match its gigantic proportions…I’ve never heard anything like it. It doesn’t instil the same emotion as the Lancaster for me but my goodness what a treat.
And now for one of my favourite races, the Lavant Cup, a 60 minute extravaganza of deep throated Aston Martins, Jaguars, Ferraris, Porsches and Lotus’ with Sir Stirling racing his own OSCA alongside Richard Attwood. Unfortunately Sir Stirling only managed a handful of laps and after entering the pit a couple of times reluctantly retired from the race with car trouble.
Penultimate race was the Glover Trophy followed by the last race of the day, the Fordwater Trophy, which by all accounts was indeed the most exciting race of the day and which was missed by a few when after a tiring full day, they decided to beat the crowds and leave early…I bet they don’t do that again!
I am not a huge fan of Formula One but a lot of great technology comes out of the sport, especially in engine development. What other company makes superior engines to BMW and Ferrari?

The Gods of Battle by Webber, Chris Edition ILL, 0 $31.49 Herodotus described the Thracians (who inhabited what is now roughly modern Bulgaria, Romania, the European part of Turkey and northern Greece) as the most numerous nation of all apart from the Indians and said that they would be the most powerful of all nations if they didn't enjoy fighting each other so much. There may have been a million Thracians, divided among as many as 40 tribes. Ancient writers were hard put to it to decide which of the Thracian tribes was the most valiant, and they were employed as mercenaries by all the great Mediterranean civilisations. Thrace had the potential to field huge numbers of troops, and the Greeks and Romans lived in fear of a dark Thracian cloud descending from the north, devastating civilisation in the Balkans. The Thracian way of warfare had a huge influence on Classical Greek and Hellenistic warfare. After Thrace was conquered by the Romans, the Thracians provided a ready source of tough auxiliaries to the Roman army. Chris Webber gives an overview of Thracian history and culture, but focuses predominantly on their warfare and weapons. The latest archaeological finds are used to give the most detailed and accurate picture yet of their arms, armour and costume. He identifies and differentiates the many different tribes, showing that their weapons and tactics varied. The resulting study should be welcomed by anyone interested in the archaeology and history of the region or in classical warfare as a whole. |

Rediscovering Traces of Memory by Webber, Jonathan; Schwarz, Chris Edition ILL, 0 $23.99 Since the Holocaust, traces of memory are virtually all that remain of more than 800 years of Jewish life in Poland. Yet some of that past can still be found if one knows how and where to look. In this remarkable album, 74 stunning color photographs bear witness to the great Jewish civilization that once flourished here. The images record the sites of Jewish life and death, and the ways in which Jewish culture is being remembered today. Captions and detailed notes explain and contextualize the photographs. An invaluable sourcebook on the Jewish heritage of Polish Galicia, this album also illustrates how photographs can help us understand the past and discover its relevance for the present. |

Michigan Wolverines Men’s Basketball $24.58 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Michigan Wolverines Men’s Basketball, University of Michigan Basketball Scandal, Fab Five. Excerpt: Fab Five was the nickname for a 1991 University of Michigan men’s basketball team recruitment class that is considered to by some to be “the greatest class ever recruited.” They were: Chris Webber , Jalen Rose , Juwan Howard , Jimmy King , Ray Jackson . Originally, the players rebelled against the monicker and attempted to give themselves the nickname Five Times’ ( written 5X’s). As high school players all five members of the Fab Five were rated in the top 100 of high school prospects in 1991. Chris Webber was ranked #1, Juwan Howard was ranked #3, Jalen Rose was ranked #6, Jimmy King was ranked #9, and Ray Jackson was ranked #84. All but Jackson participated in the McDonald’s All American game in 1991. As collegians, they became pioneers in bringing “hip hop flavor” to the game with their trash talk, long baggy shorts, shaved heads, black shoes, and black socks. Their controversial antics on the court garnered much attention from the media. In the elite eight round of the 1992 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, Michigan earned a rematch against a Jimmy Jackson -led Ohio State Buckeyes team that had beaten them twice during the regular season by double digits. Michigan won the rematch as all but two Wolverines points were scored by the Fab Five. Despite their talent, they never won a championship. They reached the NCAA championship game as freshmen in 1992 and again as sophomores in 1993. They lost to Duke 7151 in the 1992 title game and lost 7771 to North Carolina in 1993, a game which is remembered mostly for Chris Webber’s costly “timeout”, which resulted in a technical foul because Michigan did not have one remaining. Today their legacy has been |
