Where are your favorite places to go in Taipei that are not usually talked about?
I know of all the usual places that are mentioned like Taipei 101, Yamingshan park, Palace Museum, etc. But, what are your favorite places?
It could be a restaurant, a club, a shop, a market, a street, a neighborhood, an art gallery, a tea house, etc. I’m looking for something that would be interesting and maybe out to the ordinary.
It doesn’t even have to be in Taipei, but within a short distance of Taipei.
I’ve found everyone’s answers interesting. I’ve decided to extend the date to see if we get more answers or to let anyone add comments if they think of anything they might have thought about and want to add.
Favorite places to go in Taipei that are not usually talked about? There are lots of them!
I consider Taipei my home, so I know plenty of nooks and crannies, but I’ll shorten the list and tell you about the most accessible ones.
(in no particular order)
1) The fish pond in the vicinity of the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. You probably know of the C.K.S. memorial (which you can access by MRT) but you might not have experienced the serenity of sitting on the rocks by the pond to feed the koi. Go there alone or with a friend when you are tired of the bustle of the city. The fish food vending machines are designed to resemble giant fish. You can’t miss them.
2) 228 Peace Park. Take the MRT to the National Taiwan University Hospital station, ask around and you will find your way there. There’s plenty of history there but it will also make your day just watching the children play, admiring the flowers or the sculptures or the fountain, feeding the fish or enjoying the quiet of the outdoor concert area when it’s empty. Try purchasing a cup of coffee for NT35 at the eCoffee outlet right outside the park and sip your coffee on one of the benches as evening crosses into night it’s magical as long as you are at peace! Oh – and if you are lucky you might catch an ongoing concert but even if you aren’t, the buskers around the park play beautiful music.
3) National Taiwan University. Entrance is free and no one will mind you being there. Stroll down the wide windy lanes, watch and feel the lives of the students going on around you – it’s quite rewarding. If you are interested, there is a lovely bookstore on the outside just opposite the main gate.
4) More Yangmingshan. Go every season to see how the mountains change. And go beyond the park to conquer its peaks! My personal favorite is Mt Cising – you get to collect sulphur along the way because it’s volcanic. Yellow sulphur crystals in glass bottles make pretty gifts especially for your friends abroad. My favorite spot on Mt Cising is a little space next to the path with rocks on three sides. If you’re there during winter and it’s really cold, that’s the place to take a break from climbing if you don’t mind the smell of sulphur. It’s filled with volcanic steam and the wind can’t reach you there. The grassy flatland at the highest accessible point of Qingtiangang is beautiful too. Go (in the winter especially) if you want to experience the feeling of being almost literally ‘blown away’ by the wind.
5) The periphery of Xi Men Ding. Xi Men Ding is a shopping district. Getting off the MRT at Xi Men brings you to the heart of Xi Men Ding with malls where the Taiwanese celebrities hold mini concerts and do their shopping. Alighting at the National Taiwan University Hospital Station brings you to the periphery where you can shop for books, stationery, clothes and good food along the streets for better prices. There’s a market tucked away somewhere…I can’t really describe its location but you will find it if you walk down the right lane. Try the hot drink of ginger and brown sugar.
6) The Maokong Gondola (take the MRT to the Maokong station). Your Easy Card will get you a ride on a gondola as easy as it gets you a ride on the MRT. The view of Taipei from the gondolas is amazing!
7) The Taipei Zoo (take the MRT to the Zoo station). It’s big and clean and exciting if you love animals as much as I do. You won’t need more than NT60 for an adult’s ticket and believe it or not, you can use your Easy Card for that too!
There’s a restaurant in Shenkeng that’s famous for the variety of ways it dishes up tofu. It’s a beautiful place to eat but I’m sorry I can’t help you with the directions because both times my family went it was my uncle who drove us there.
I recommend Wulai too. Someone once described the place to me as “heaven on earth” and I must agree. You could go mountain-biking there or wander down one of the mountain trails with towering cypresses above you and the creek below you clear as sunshine. My fondest memories there are of walking barefoot on the pebbles and rocks along the bank, having instant noodles cooked over a stove with water from the creek, and attempting to skip stones across the creek when I was done with the food. We had to head back before dark, but I’ve heard you could walk all the way to Yilan on that trail. You will need to apply for a pass though if you’re planning on driving there – it’s a simple online process. They have that to limit the number of vehicles in the mountains and I think that’s wonderful.
If you find yourself in Keelung, you must visit Jiu Fen and Hoping Island! Jiu Fen is a traditional little street up a mountain where people visit for a breathtaking view and a bowl of sweet potato or yam balls. Stray a little from that area (I’m not sure how) and you will see a river flowing down to meet the sea that’s tinted gold by the minerals in the soil. You can reach Hoping Island by taxi. You will find yourself between strange, majestic rocks and crashing waves. It’s a desolate place that will take your breath away and make you feel very, very small – one of my favorite places in Taiwan.

Aria: The Opera Album $6.99 Andre Bocelli is no opera singer, but he shows far more potential in this album than does another pop-vocalist tenor-wannabe, Michael Bolton. For one thing, he can shake off the crooner mannerisms and really sing when performing music that calls for it. At his best, he has a rich, dark timbre and an easy, unforced top. At other times, however, the tone turns dry and thin and the high notes ar… |

Church Marketing 101 by Reising, Richard L. Edition , 0 $21.49 Over 90 percent of all Christian churches in the United States have fewer than 200 members. While they vary in shape, size, ethnicity, and denomination, they have one thing in common: the desire to grow. So why is it that some churches fail to grow for years, while other congregations in the same community increase exponentially? The problem, says church marketing authority Richard Reising, is that most churches should not be doing promotion. Instead, they should focus on the preparation that will make members eager to invite others. In ChurchMarketing 101®, he demystifies basic marketing principles for the church, evaluates them against biblical principles, and illustrates how simple changes can remove roadblocks that hinder members from reaching out. Reising's simple yet insightful approach will be invaluable to pastors and ministry leaders from churches of all denominations and styles. |

101 Things to Learn in Art School by White, Kit Edition ILL, 0 $18.49 What is the first thing to learn in art school? Art can be anything. The second thing? Learn to draw. With 101 Things to Learn in Art School, artist and teacher Kit White delivers and develops such lessons, striking an instructive balance between technical advice and sage concepts. These 101 maxims, meditations, and demonstrations offer both a toolkit of ideas for the art student and a set of guiding principles for the artist. Complementing each of the 101 succinct texts is an equally expressive drawing by the artist, often based on a historical or contemporary work of art, offering a visual correlative to the written thought. Art can be anything is illustrated by a drawing of Duchamp's famous urinal; a description of chiaroscuro art is illuminated by an image after Caravaggio; a lesson on time and media is accompanied by a view of a Jenny Holzer projection; advice about surviving a critique gains resonance from Piero della Francesca's arrow-pierced Saint Sebastian. 101 Things to Learn in Art School offers advice about the issues artists confront across all artistic media, but this is no simple handbook to making art. It is a guide to understanding art as a description of the world we live in, and it is a guide to using art as a medium for thought. And so this book belongs on the reading list of art students, art teachers, and artists, but it also belongs in the library of everyone who cares about art as a way of understanding life. |
