Choosing An Internet Connect Provider For Business Use

Choosing a provider for broad band is very much a minefield with so many different companies talking about speeds and download amounts. Some will offer you combined phone and broadband and some even throwing in some form of TV service in as well. If you can’t afford your own dedicated leased line, this may of use.

If you have an existing phone line it is most likely a BT line, but you may also be in a cable area. There is a number of websites which will tell you this information. But just because you have a BT phone line doesn’t mean that you are just restricted to providers that resell BT backhaul. A LLU or local loop unbundling service is when an ISP will get their own hardware installed within the exchange so you don’t share the same line. Normally this means you end up with a better connection speed especially at peak times and the quality of service is excellent. This can work out cheaper as well. Websites can tell you which LLU services are available at your exchange by entering your post code and phone number in. Should you find only a couple or none it just means you are probably going to end up using BTs services to get your data to your ISP.

The speed you see in an advertisement and what you end up with are two vastly different things, the large 8 or 24mb that will catch your eye will have a very small “up to” at the front of it. Whereas before with ADSL 1 you had a fixed speed, but ADSL 2 and ADSL 2+ you get the fastest speed the line can take stabley. The closer to the exchange you live the faster speed you can get. If you can get it, business broadband sdsl is worth considering as well.

You also need to look at the bandwidth allowance you get and this is how much data you can download. Should you be a very casual user who checks their emails for five minutes and reads some internet news sites then you would not need much. However if you are a big family who all want to be watching online TV and be online gaming then you will run out of bandwidth quite quickly. You also need to read the small print on when there on and off peek download limits are enforce, many this is 0800 – 0000 as peak usage and so can be a gotcha but some can be 1600 2200 which may be better for people who are not always out during the day.

Free or cheap hardware is often available to you, but don’t expect anything quality, its aimed at a novice so just be careful. Ensure you read everything twice, both the contract and the small print on advertisements. As you do not want to be left paying 50 pounds a month for the next 33 after a great 5 pound deal ran out after three months. When making any form of comparison you need to ensure your comparing it exactly and so may need to do some maths to convert all the money, bandwidth and speed into figures that are all represented the same.

Cisco Router and Switch Forensics by Liu, Dale Edition ILL, 0

Cisco Router and Switch Forensics by Liu, Dale Edition ILL, 0

$44.49

Cisco IOS (the software that runs the vast majority of Cisco routers and all Cisco network switches) is the dominant routing platform on the Internet and corporate networks. This widespread distribution, as well as its architectural deficiencies, makes it a valuable target for hackers looking to attack a corporate or private network infrastructure. Compromised devices can disrupt stability, introduce malicious modification, and endanger all communication on the network. For security of the network and investigation of attacks, in-depth analysis and diagnostics are critical, but no book currently covers forensic analysis of Cisco network devices in any detail. Cisco Router and Switch Forensics is the first book devoted to criminal attacks, incident response, data collection, and legal testimony on the market leader in network devices, including routers, switches, and wireless access points. Why is this focus on network devices necessary? Because criminals are targeting networks, and network devices require a fundamentally different approach than the process taken with traditional forensics. By hacking a router, an attacker can bypass a network’s firewalls, issue a denial of service (DoS) attack to disable the network, monitor and record all outgoing and incoming traffic, or redirect that communication anywhere they like. But capturing this criminal activity cannot be accomplished with the tools and techniques of traditional forensics. While forensic analysis of computers or other traditional media typically involves immediate shut-down of the target machine, creation of a duplicate, and analysis of static data, this process rarely recovers live system data. So, when an investigation focuses on live network activity, this traditional approach obviously fails. Investigators must recover data as it is transferred via the router or switch, because it is destroyed when the network device is powered down. In this case, following the traditional approach outlined in books on general computer forensics techniques is not only insufficient, but also essentially harmful to an investigation.Jargon buster: A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN). A router is a more sophisticated network device that joins multiple wired or wireless networks together.* The only book devoted to forensic analysis of routers and switches, focusing on the operating system that runs the vast majority of network devices in the enterprise and on the Internet* Outlines the fundamental differences between router forensics and traditional forensics, a critical distinction for responders in an investigation targeting network activity* Details where network forensics fits within the entire process of an investigation, end to end, from incident response and data collection to preparing a report and legal testimony

The Internet of Elsewhere by Farivar, Cyrus Edition ILL, 0

The Internet of Elsewhere by Farivar, Cyrus Edition ILL, 0

$23.49

Through the lens of culture, The Internet of Elsewhere looks at the role of the Internet as a catalyst in transforming communications, politics, and economics. Cyrus Farivar explores the Internet’s history and effects in four distinct and, to some, surprising societies–Iran, Estonia, South Korea, and Senegal. He profiles Web pioneers in these countries and, at the same time, surveys the environments in which they each work. After all, contends Farivar, despite California’s great success in creating the Internet and spawning companies like Apple and Google, in some areas the United States is still years behind other nations.Surprised? You won’t be for long as Farivar proves there are reasons that:Skype was invented in Estonia–the same country that developed a digital ID system and e-voting;Iran was the first country in the world to arrest a blogger, in 2003; South Korea is the most wired country on the planet, with faster and less expensive broadband than anywhere in the United States;Senegal may be one of sub-Saharan Africa’s best chances for greater Internet access. The Internet of Elsewhere brings forth a new complex and modern understanding of how the Internet spreads globally, with both good and bad effects.

Excerpt: BT Openzone is the name given to a network of Wi-Fi hotspots deployed by British Telecom . BT operates around 4000 wireless stations in the UK, located in public locations such as cafés, hotels, pubs, stations and airports; BT’s network accounts for 40 % of the UK’s wifi hotspot population. Premises with BT’s business hub (an ADSL broadband router aimed at small business premises) can opt to enable BT Openzone functionality on their equipment (allowing roaming Openzone customers to connect via a firewalled network). BT has also adapted some of its population of public phone boxes to include an Openzone hotspot. Access can be gained through “pre-paid vouchers” purchasable over the counter at the hotspot locations, or via BT’s website. Members of the BT FON community can obtain access to BT Fon, BT Openzone and FON hotspots only (not via a roaming partners i.e T-Mobile , NTT Communications) free of charge after joining the scheme. BT also has deals with large UK mobile phone companies O2 and Orange to provide internet access for their subscribers, particularly to those with smart phones such as the Apple iPhone .
