Basic Keys to Successful Affiliate Program Management

It can be a little tricky to run successful affiliate program management. While it’s easier these days with the continued production and refining of affiliate management software, there are still a number of crucial tips you need to keep in mind from the beginning. Here are some of the most basic keys to successful affiliate program management.

First and foremost- you have to understand that the majority of the affiliates that you attract aren’t going to do a lot for your business. It’s nice to believe the hype that all you have to do is post your affiliate program and you’ll suddenly have more super effective affiliates than you can keep straight. The truth of the matter is that there are a number of super effective affiliates out there who will make the majority of your affiliate sales, and then there are hundreds of unsuccessful affiliates who might generate a sale or two for you, here and there.

This actually isn’t that bad of a thing. After all, it’s a lot easier to attract, manage and work with only a handful of super-effective affiliates than it would be to have to attract, manage and work with hundreds of moderately effective affiliates. From the beginning, from the first day that you start an affiliate program, you need to be on the lookout for those affiliates who are going to generate 90% or more of your sales. When you find these affiliates, you will do well to identify them and to try and find more people like them. Putting your energy into this work will be a lot more effective and profitable than putting your energy into chasing and attempting to motivate 300 middling affiliates.

Next, you’re going to need to develop a system to manage your affiliates. There is an easy way to do this, and a hard way. If you want to make things difficult for yourself, you can cobble together a system of your own from trial and error. If you want to make it easy on yourself, you’ll just get some software that will help you manage and track your affiliates. If you are going to purchase some affiliate management software it’s a lot smarter to purchase it from the start, instead of trying to implement it after you’ve already developed a lot of bad habits.

Finally, you need to understand that if you don’t keep track of what your affiliates are doing then you’re going to get some people using spamming and other unscrupulous techniques to sell your products. While these types of affiliates might generate some short-term sales for you, ultimately they will hurt your brand and your products’ reputation, and cause a lot of problems for you and your sales in the long term. Whenever you identify that someone is employing these techniques you need to cut them out of your program immediately.
